Observational Walk Through Look Fors next week
Math: Evidence of formative assessment aligned with the Learning Target. This will be evidenced by the lesson plan, the activity matching the Learning Target, and the teacher attention to the student work that will guide upcoming instructional decisions.
Reading: Small group that includes lesson plan at the small group table and/or whole group that is aligned with the NNPS Curriculum expectations
As always, Learning Environment--Relationship building is as intentional as the at we teach math (or reading).
Are you using Mindfulness strategies to provide brain breaks and re-focus students. If you have to raise your voice to get more than one students attention, then a Mindfulness Brain Break is there to help. Are your morning meeting and closing circles building a classroom community.

A mentor text during writing--a student writing. All students had copy, all students read along as the teacher read aloud.
Conferencing with writers
Action Item: Book Pusher display
I will be visiting classrooms next week to take pictures and highlight Book Pusher displays. Here is a picture of the display from Melene Skeeter's fifth grade room.
Your display should be clearly labeled with "Book Pusher" themes wherever it is located--wall, cabinetry, or hallway, etc. In Mrs. Skeeter's room, each student name is listed and the bubbles indicate books they have read
RELATIONSHIP BUILDING IS AS INTENTIONAL AS THE WAY WE TEACH READING
Great pictures and observations this week of classroom community building including morning meetings, mindfulness, and SPONTANEOUS APPLAUSE by classmates of a classmate who gave a great answer in reading
Equation: If you have to raise your voice to more than one student during a lesson or independent work, it is time for a Mindfulness Brain Break
A Morning Experience (ME) in Rachel Letchworth's first grade room
Are your Morning Experiences timely, purposeful and are kids participating in them. If the students are not participating in a healthy way with the activity, go back to the drawing board and design a new ME. At least 5 kids are participating in this Morning Experience.

Morning meeting that is building a community. There was laughter, there was clapping and all students spoke and participated in Kerri Nelson's first grade morning meeting

Building Community: Relationship building is as intentional as the way we teach reading

Action Item: Back to School Reading Night
Each classroom should have a reading activity that a student can perform with their family member. The spirit of Back to School Night is that the family member is coming 'back to school.' Examples may include:
Completing a word sort
Reading together (read a chapter; have a Reader's Theatre script)
Reading a passage and completing a plot map
Read a passage or book online
In other words, think about what you have the student do during your Reading block and have those materials at their seat so they can complete an activity with their family member.
Each classroom should set this up and expect family members to visit their classroom after the Wax Museum event begins. The Wax Museum event begins at 530 and families will visit rooms soon thereafter. Please remind families to visit the Book Fair too.
