Students Share Perspectives on Summer GEAR UP College Tour

This past summer, GEAR UP took about 80 students (rising juniors) on a 3-day, 2-night College Campus Tour. They visited four colleges, took the practice ACT or SAT test, participated in test-prep work sessions provided by Appleroth and wrote essays that will help prepare the students for college.

Students were able to experience college life by viewing college lecture halls, speaking with admissions representatives and college students, sleeping in dorms, eating on campus and more.

Two students shared their perspectives on the summer:

The College tour experience was definitely something I’m glad I pursued and attended. The tour gives you an actual college experience, not something where you'd just sign up and go around sight-seeing. Staying in the dorms and attending the tours and facilities of the colleges really gives you a taste of what is right around the corner. Everything appealed to me, including the rich history behind each college. Going on the trip also makes you realize how serious high school really is, and how real what is to come in 2 years really is. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience.

--Shasheen Kher

My personal experience in this trip was great. I had a lot of fun and I started to really think about college. I really found the ACT work session great, especially the fact that we got a whole guide for the ACT. I also got to see how it is to stay in a dorm in college. After the trip, I was really able to get an idea of college requirements, and I know that I need to start planning so that I know what I need to get into the college I wish to go to. Overall, I found this trip to be very beneficial, as well as a memorable and fun experience.
