A Note From Mrs. McCall
I know an email came from the district about grades, but most of it pertained to middle and high school. I wanted to take a second to explain elementary's plan on grades.
Our elementary district team worked together alongside teachers to choose essential standards that were unique to each grade level. While most of these standards had been visited by teachers already, we want them to be at mastery by the end of the 4th quarter. They chose:
- 7 essential standards for reading and writing
- 7 essential standards for math
- 7 essential standards for science
- 7 essential standards for social studies
Right now, our goal is that each student has mastered those standards before the end of the year. While we may not be taking traditional grades, we are recording if the students have mastered each standard or if they are working towards mastery. This will be very important for next year's teachers to know.
At the end of the day, our biggest concern is if each student knows the content rather than what letter grade they should earn during this unique time.
I hope this helps!
Please stay healthy and know we are missing you all every day!

Hey, Eagles!
I sure miss our library...but I’m missing you MORE! Click the links below for a bit of book fun this week! The first link is a read aloud featuring a VERY funny picture book. This particular title is perfect for the whole family! The second link may be a bit more interesting for our older Eagles. I’m sharing with you a book series recommendation that I hope you fall in love with. I know I sure did...
Happy Reading!

Counselor's Corner:
Community Service Logs:
- Please hold on to community service logs until the fall. You may begin a new log as of April 1st for next school year. Check out the list of great service ideas you can be doing NOW. I will collect all logs and celebrate all of your hard work at an assembly next school year. Keep up your incredible service to our community. Your efforts make a HUGE difference."
Kindest Kansas Citian Reception:
- Unfortunately, we will not be having a reception with our Kindest Kansas Citian nominees this school year. Instead, I will be sending all essays and pictures from the students who participated through email to the nominees. I will copy the student's family email on the message so that students can be part of that special moment when his/her nominee reads the essay or sees the drawing. Thank you for having a flexible mindset! I'm confident that this will STILL be a bucket filling experience for all!

Watch this video on how to draft a GOOD email:
1) Visit Kiddle and search this: life hacks + kids
2) Watch a video or visit a website to find a new life hack.
3) Send Mr. Whalen a well-drafted email that includes the following:
-A description of your favorite life hack
-How technology has been a challenge for you these days. What problems have you had? What would you like to know more about?
Grades K-2 Extension:
Pay attention to all things that are in motion around you. Find something that moves really fast, and take a slow motion video of it. Make sure it is less than 20 seconds long, and post it to SeeSaw. Add a voice recording of what you saw that you would have missed at normal speed.
