MEET MISS BERTHA KLENOVA (Part 2)
Miss Bertha Klenova, born of Jewish parents in Russia ahead of the Bolshevik Revolution, was destined, it seems, to arrive in Florence just when her remarkable linguistic skills were most needed. Upon her arrival in 1939, her first task was to find an apartment. In her writings, she states that she located only two likely apartments, so, of course, she had to settle on one of them. She loved her work at TVA translating documents -- mainly from Germany -- for the brilliant scientists there. And she especially enjoyed selecting books for herself from the fine TVA library, which a library clerk would bring to her desk. She was genuinely pleased, too, to learn that the Muscle Shoals Concert Association, founded in 1935 through the efforts of William Lile Harris and Gladys Shepard, among others, was bringing world-class vocal and instrumental musicians to the area. Before long, Miss Klenova had a coterie of local friends who eventually insisted that she write her memoir. This several-hundred-page unpublished manuscript is owned by the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library. From 1939 to her passing in 1984, Miss Bertha Klenova enriched the life of her adopted city, and she was enriched by it.
