VOCATIONAL VINE: WINTER
Your monthly/seasonal look inside the SHS Vocational Dept.
It's Back!
Instead of several editions, we wanted to compile the winter news together into one VV - the months were short, cold and hosted multiple snow days so it just made sense! Stay tuned for the MARCH edition in a couple of weeks!!
Agriculture Department/FFA
"Living to Serve"
"Learning to do, Doing to learn, Earning to live, Living to serve." The chapter strives to apply the FFA motto literally as often as possible. We are always honored to take part in the Veterans Day ceremony in the Gym. Chapter officers also took part in serving the Riggins Ag Equipment Customer Appreciation Lunch.
Barnwarming & Bowling
Barnwarming has taken on a new form over the years - bowling! Members competed in November by way of a few rounds of friendly pin dropping, then took part in a huge toy collection to benefit the Saline County Holiday Project.
Their Hands Aren't Really Green...
Greenhands are first year FFA members - they must recite their FFA Creed, establish an SAE Project, participate in chapter activities and be enrolled in an introductory Ag Science class. Greenhand members had a big season between receiving their official blue corduroy jackets and being initiated into the organization to receive bronze FFA pins. The Greenhands also traveled to the State Fairgrounds to meet with other Area VI jackets and State FFA Officers for the 2020 Greenhand Motivational Conference.
Recruit, Educate, Repeat.
Students worked hard this Fall/Winter to assemble lessons for our awesome elementary classes (to continue this Spring!) as well as recruitment tools for incoming students from rural schools AND Slater. Representatives traveled to Orearville, Gilliam, Miami and Hardeman to speak to 8th graders. Others showcased a board at the Student Activity Fair during Freshman Orientation. The Ag Leadership/Food Science Class hosted Mrs. Boggs, Mrs. Thies, Mrs. Gessling and their classes for the first Ag in the Classroom of the year.
In the Ag Room...
Check out what students were up to in the Ag Room, shop and lab areas this winter below!
Wingin' It.
Food Science students learned flavor profiling techniques to create wing sauce recipes of their own for a team challenge!
Don't Sweat It...
Ag Construction students took a lesson from Alumni Terry Jordan on how to properly sweat copper.
For the Birds.
Ag Science I students got a hands on look at proper bird handling to kick off the Poultry Unit.
Prepping for Spring
It doesn't matter what the subject area, activity or age level - Spring is BUSY at school - for EVERYONE! FFA takes a deep breath as well to prepare for a crazy contest and meeting season. Members are headed to practice contests, interviews, leadership gatherings and more.
Upper level students hosted a CDE Night in the cafeteria for new members to experience and learn more about contest options throughout HS. General contest prep has also been taking place in the classroom through multiple activities - thanks to all staff who have stopped by for their own "taste" of various contests...Food Science in particular!
Fall Public Speaking Participants + Joslyn
Official Business
State FFA Officer, Tyler Schuster interacted with new members about the importance of the organization as well as leadership opportunities within it. Tyler represents Area VI this year.
Getting Fruity
Annual Fruit Sales took place in November and December with near record sales! Thank you to all who supported this long standing tradition in time for the holidays. Most popular item? GRAPEFRUIT!
National FFA Week
The end of February always means FFA Week for people in the Ag Room. Members participated in Spirit Days throughout the week, held a Dodgeball/Boundball matchup in the Gym and attended their annual church service.
The Prez is Proficient!
Big CONGRATULATIONS wishes go out to Chapter President, Kirby Richards as she won the Area VI Proficiency Award in Food Services! She will be recognized on stage at State FFA Convention in April where she will be competing against the other 15 FFA areas from around the state. Good luck, Kirby!
Business Department/FBLA
Warehousing
Have you shopped at the Wildcat Warehouse yet? The website is sooooooo close to being finished (props to the SHS Web Design class)! We have items ready for you - or bring anything in to have personalized. From banners to shirts to tumblers and more...we are here to let you #weartheware!!
FBLA Week
National FBLA Week take place every February to celebrate the organization. This year, students took part in Spirit Days (snow days took a couple of those) and ended the week with the annual Staff Appreciation Breakfast.
Let's Compete!
Members headed to District Competition in areas of Business Communications, Accounting, Agribusiness, Health Care Administration, Journalism, Entrepreneurship, Publication Design, Sports Management and Digital Video Production. Students also took part in online testing at home as an additional component. Congratulations to all on a fun season!
Activities Schmactivities
With our monthly activities, we like to have fun! In November, we hosted our chapter favorite Thanksgiving Dinner in the HS hallway followed by a rowdy game of BINGO, in December, we decorated sugar cookies for staff and wrapped gifts for our adopted families and in January, officers put together a chapter scavenger hunt around town. Whew...good times!

Dimes for Days
FBLA's National Service Project - the March of Dimes - recognizes World Prematurity Day in November. Slater FBLA, with the help of staff, raised money to benefit the non-profit again this year. Thanks to all who participated!
In the Lab
Check out what has been happening in the Business Room...
Groceries!
Personal Finance took a real time look at grocery shopping within the budgeting unit. Sophomore students were given a certain amount of money to spend on their weekly shopping.
What's the code?
Web Design students learned just how tricky coding could be - and how useful templates are in today's web building world!
"Check" it off!
The Checking Unit is always one of the most practical to tackle - terminology included. PF students took on the team challenge of identifying banking terms on a school scavenger hunt.
Media Mania
3rd Quarter was a touch and go themed media time with focus going to in-class projects versus specific output to the district. But...4th quarter is a reboot time - stay tuned for news, photography and podcasting. Check out what was happening behind the scenes with individualized projects in the classroom!
Teamwork in Action
Multimedia students Angelika Kehoe, Madisyn Beeler and Devin Clark were camera ready for their chance to make a step by step production. They then edited their clips to make a smooth transition video.
Lights, Camera, Object Placement
Senior Chandler Zdybel worked with camera angles and lighting as the first step in still photography.
Martha Stewart Who?
Senior Abby Uhlich cooked up a delicious Fall dish - Pumpkin Cheesecake Squares - for her Multimedia Food Production!
Join Us!
The Student Activity Fair was a success this year with several incoming students showing great interest! Big thank you to the representatives who showed everyone the opportunities in these organizations.

We are shooting for an even bigger goal this year in sales! Get your name on the reservation list for the 2019-20 SLAWICA Yearbook! They are $30 until March 31st!!!! (Books move to $40 officially on April 1st) Also...snag one of the few 2018-19 editions while they are still available for pick-up! $40 each.
FBLA Day!
Mizzou held it's annual FBLA Day for Chapter Presidents and Vice Presidents in December. Abby and Kirby met with fellow officers from around the State and attended workshops on campus revolving around future employment skills.
Can You Spot It?
Business Law students took a long look at False Advertising. While food companies do what they have to do to make food appealing in advertisements, sometimes it can take an illegal front. But...we focused on the legal side and had some fun. Students grouped up to recreate their own advertisements, then polled HS and JH students/staff. Can you guess which is real and fake?
