$1105 Fundraised for Waipawa School
We will be sending through the $1105 we raised from he gold coin cazh day held last Friday to Waipawa School. Our connection to Waiapwa is through Office Administrator Sally Jarvis and Year 6 Teacher Jill McCleneghan. Sally is from Waipawa and went to school there. Jill grew up in the area as well and attended technology classes at Waipawa. We wanted to do all could do to help after the Waipawa buerst its bank and flooded the school. When the Waipawa River broke through the stock bank, it gushed down the street the Primary school is on, completely covering the grounds. In the Principal Paul Jamieson's own words, 'it was like a river'! That water also covered half of the Waipawa township. In what seems like a bit of a miracle, the water leveled off within an inch of the bottom of the doors. So, the classrooms were fine. However, they have lost sports gear, music gear, bike equipment, the lime off their bike track and the 2 year old turf on their courts needs to be replaced and some sheds. Whilst insurance will cover the big things, as we all know it is the resources and equipment that the children use that is often the hardest to replace. There are 3 teachers who have a long road ahead in terms of damage to their homes and one who has lost everything. There are lots of students who will be displaced because their family homes are unliveable. The emotional effects have not yet hit the children but will no doubt come to the surface over the coming weeks.
