Mystery of the Lascaux Cave Story told by: Dorothy HInshaw Patent

September 12, 1940: four students in their teen years stumbled on a finding that would change how we see the people that came before us. They found a secret passage under the ground in a cave. They saw something that looked like drawings on the wall and when they were able to see the whole picture once lit up, there were many drawings of deer, horses and other animals. This discovery has led to our history books today in learning about how the first people may have lived.

Standards:

8.1.6.B: Differentiate between fact and opinion, multiple points of view, and primary and secondary sources to explain historical events.

Strategy of Lesson

If students are presented with a form of visual aid to start a new topic, it has been my experience that they are more intrigued by the material. The video captures sound and visual movement to keep their attention. With keeping the students interested, I pose questions that will force them to think about what it may have been like in the times of these drawings. The students may even begin to imagine themselves in the place of the cave at the time of the drawings. Students can go to websites provided by the teacher and explore on their own and make conclusions as to what these people from the drawings were trying to convey, or were they just passing time? There are so many forms of information on the web to help navigate students through lessons such as this one of the ancient cave drawings.

Extension: To further a form of cooperative lesson I would have the students make their own class mural incorporating symbols that pertain to what they consider important to them and portray them on a large piece of paper to showcase to the school community. Along with this mural I would assess their work by observing how they work with one another and question them about their pictures/symbols they chose. The grade would be dependent on how well they can explain their choice.
