The Horace Mann & Leet Connection
Online Learning April 13-17, 2020
Message from Princial King and Director Rouner
Hello Families,
We hope you are all doing well. Please know you are in our thoughts that serve as the driving force in our continued work from home each day. In reflecting upon the new normal we all live in now, I found myself pondering upon the quote below.
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”― Fred Rogers
The beautiful thing about children is their ability to look at the world through innocent eyes. I am inspired by the way I am hearing of our children acting as helpers. We have preschoolers paired up with seniors in the community as pen-pals, children sending positive messages to teachers on Seesaw to brighten their days, and even a 4th-grade friend looking to start a puzzle exchange to find constructive ways for friends to spend their time. In a time when it is
easy to become frustrated, children are rising above it all and becoming helpers in our world.
Library Book Checkout and Return
We are so happy to offer you virtual learning activities but we also understand the value of having hands-on materials in the hands of children. This week we will begin implementing drive-thru pick-up of library books for our families. Mrs. Shields and Nurse Cara have teamed up to put the appropriate precautions in place to safely share print library books with our families. Please use the protocol below to request and pick up materials.
- Use the Book Search Tutorial below to learn how to search the available books at Horace Mann.
- Use the Library Book Request Form to request up to 5 books per child by Tuesday at 9:00 pm.
- On Thursdays from 4:30-6:30 pm, drop off and pick up library books.
- Families should stay in their vehicles.
- One designated person will collect books dropped off from vehicles. (Books will be held in isolation for 72 hours prior to reshelving.)
- One person will deliver new books to vehicles.
- All library workers will follow CDC precautions of social distancing, proper handwashing in packaging materials, and the use of hand sanitizer between vehicle contacts.
Preschool
It's been good to see you!
- We collaborate with experiences together!
- We remind each other we are still here for each other!
- We remember that important learning and discoveries happen through play!
- We see our friends and smile again!
- We will provide a whole group meeting every morning at 9:00 a.m. at this link https://www.facebook.com/groups/262617593874304/ through the Leet Center private Facebook page. See you there!
- During the whole group meeting there will be a prompt for some play ideas, experiences or activities that might be fun for your child. You may choose to do them if you'd like. Conversations with your child, playing beside them and asking questions about how they are playing will be a great benefit to their play and learning themes.
- When you are ready, share your child's story with their own class in their teacher's new private group page on Facebook that they have made for this pandemic time. Your child will be able to connect with their friends, teach others a skill they have, or reach out to add to the group experience or project that their teacher is prompting.
- There will also be a few nutrition experiences throughout the weeks. You can find those on the Facebook page as well.

Phyllis and Richard Leet Center for Children and Families
At the Leet Center, family relationships and children are our passion! At the heart of our learning together, you will find educators who see children as capable learners. Children learn through investigation, exploration, and communication. Our pre-school environment is a natural home-like atmosphere that is filled with inquiry and joy each day.
The Leet Center is also home to our developing outdoor classroom and we believe that all the learning that happens indoors can also be present in the outdoor spaces. Open-ended materials and carefully cultivated spaces provide a place for collaboration, thinking, and representation of ideas. Our learning community includes educators and university students who are working together to listen and learn with children. Children, educators, and families each play an important role in honoring the intellectual and emotional integrity of children.
