Berkeley Lake Elementary
Bear Essentials - February 19, 2016
It was a short week for our students with the Presidents’ Day holiday, but our staff was here participating in professional learning and preparing for parent conferences.
Early Release Parent Conferences
I hope that all of you had a chance to sign up for a conference on Early Release Parent Conference Days next Wednesday and Thursday, February 24 and 25. If you have not, please contact your child’s teacher to arrange for a time. Teachers are looking forward to meeting with you. This is a very important meeting in which you will hear how your child is performing. The following information will be shared with you: the Reading Continuum, the Writing Continuum, the Math Continuum, the Title I school parent compact, the Promotion requirements and individual information about your child's academic performance. Please contact your child's teacher if you have questions or if we can support in any way. Please remember students will be dismissed at 12:00 on both days, February 24 and 25 and go home their usual way unless parents write a note to the teacher to change transportation.
We Need Your Input
On Early Release days while you are here for parent teacher conferences please visit Computer Lab 4 to take the Title I Parent Survey. We value your input and utilize your feedback to plan for upcoming programs. Also, please visit the Parent Center to check out materials and games on language arts and math skills to support your child’s learning. Thank you!
Classroom Door Decorations
We are excited to invite you to walk through the halls when you are here for conferences to see the fabulous door decorations from our Student Council sponsored “No Place for Hate” door decorating contest. Each class came up with a way to ”Show Love/Kindness on the Door.” The students and the teachers were so creative with the door messages expressing kindness, love and anti-bullying. Berkeley Lake is a “No Place for Hate” school for the second consecutive year. Thank you to our students, Mr. LaMotte, Ms. Houser, Ms. Maida and Ms. Marantz for this anti-bullying awareness project for our school.
Congratulations to Jessica Ganji and Eric Xu. Their PTA Reflections entries won at the state level. The Reflections theme for this year was “Let Your Imagination Fly”. Jessica’s musical composition and Eric’s artwork will be on display at the Woodruff Art Center March 6. We are so proud of their accomplishments.
PTA membership cards will be in your child's Friday Folder this week. Thank you to all the parents and 100% of the staff who joined the PTA. There is still time to join by sending $7 to your child’s teacher. Our PTA adds value to the school experience through sponsoring cultural arts programs and support for our events for all students.
Also remember that the PTA spirit wear will be sold on the following Fridays: March 4, March 31 and May 6.
BINGO Night is Coming

These are brief concerts to share the music and AKS the students have been working on in class : Thursday, March 10 - 1st grade concert at 9:00 am - Cafeteria; Wednesday, March 16 - Kindergarten concerts at 9:00 and 9:30 - Cafeteria; Friday, March 18 - Volunteer Breakfast with chorus at 7:30 AM - Media Center; and Friday, April 15 - 2nd grade concert at 5:30 (before Dance-a-thon).
Fifth Grade Promotion and Celebration Day
I know it seems far off, but it's time for us to start planning our Fifth Grade Promotion and Celebration Day. If you are interested in being on this committee, please contact Bernina Jones firstname.lastname@example.org or Mary Mansfield email@example.com. Mr. Carter is the fifth grade AP working with our PTA volunteers to plan this very special occasion for our fifth grade students.
If there are no delays due to inclement weather, mark your calendars for Fifth Grade Promotion Day Program scheduled for May 24 at 4:15 at Duluth High School. Celebration Day will be the last day of school. This is such an important event that I wanted to get the information out as early as possible so everyone can make plans to attend.
Have a restful weekend. I look forward to seeing you next week at conferences.
