Eagle Nation: Weekly GWHS News
Back 2 School Edition: Vol 1. Issue 8/ October 20, 2021
From the Principal's Desk
Dear Eagle Nation,
I hope that you and your families are all still well and managing to keep safe. As we begin the second 9 weeks grading period, I wanted to start by thanking you all as parents and carers for your fantastic support over the last 9 weeks. I am particularly appreciative for everything that you have been doing to support our safety initiatives and high academic expectations. With two teenage children myself, I know how difficult it is to juggle working with supporting your own children with their schooling, and this is of course in addition to dealing with all of the normal challenges of family life. The school has received a number of messages of thanks and support from so many of you over these past few weeks, and these are all received with a very grateful heart. Thank you.
I would like to thank once again all of the teaching staff who have continued to work exceptionally hard to ensure that the students of George Washington High School receive the best quality education possible. I hope that your son/daughter has shared with you some of the fantastic initiatives that we are rolling out here at GW such as FEV tutoring, a free online tutoring service available to all GW students (more information below) and E-Hall Pass. As said previously, nothing can replace the impact of students being in school to receive the direct instruction and immediate feedback from their teachers, that is why it is so very important that students are in school daily eager and ready to learn. If you have any questions or concerns about the GW attendance policy, Covid related absences or the DPS/GWHS truancy policy, please reach out to Mr. Antoine Fullerwinder, the AP in charge of attendance, or to your student's guidance counselor.
Have a fantastic week Eagles,
Dr. Johnnie M. Simmons
Proud Principal
George Washington High School

Congratulations to the GWHS Fighting Eagles Drill Team
Please help me congratulate the GW NJROTC Drill Team. On October 9, 2021 the Fighting Eagles won the Dan River High School "Wildcat" Drill Meet.
According to Master Chief Green, the cadets performance was 'absolutely outstanding" and one judge shared that he "got chills" from their precision and execution.
We took 1st Place JV Squad Unarmed, 1st Place Varsity Squad Unarmed, 1st Place Varsity Squad Armed, 1st Place Armed Individual, 2nd Place Platoon Unarmed, 2nd Place Inspection Team and 1st Place Overall. Cadet Rachel Martin also came in 3rd Place (out of 80 Cadets competing) in the Knockout Competition (a game similar to Simon Says).
Master Chief Greene would also like to thank all the parents that attended the Drill Meet in support. He went on to share, "I'm proud of all the cadets and particularly our first year marchers! Special shoutout to our mentor LCDR Frank Hitt for his now 25 years of dedication to this program".
I couldn't have said it any better Chief! Way to represent Eagles...way to represent!!!!!!!

NJROTC Annual Review
This week's issue spotlights the GWHS NJROTC program. As we prepare for this week's Annual Review, I found it fitting to share with you the hard work that the cadets and instructors put in every day in preparation. I hope that you enjoy this video from the 2019 annual review, and cadets, we hope that you know just how proud we are of you!!! Keep up the good work!
