UOI 1: How the world Works

Transdisciplinary Theme:

An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.

What Have We Learned This Unit?


  • Students have been identifying a shape’s attributes to recognize and draw categories of polygons like triangles quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and more.
  • We have begun to understand parallel lines and how to draw them and identify them within a shape.
  • Students have used a set of shapes to create a new shapes as well as combine shapes and build composite shapes.
  • Students have also observed shapes in nature and of living things through science and art connection to math, we have also read the book "Bug Shapes" and drawn some of the shapes that we see in nature labeling the sides and angles.
  • Next students will start to identify the number of edges, faces, and corners, build and partition shapes by combining two or more smaller shapes and relating the parts to the whole and begin working with fractions and telling time.

English Language Arts

In English Language Arts

  • In Speaking and Listening, students are exploring the idea that stories have a life cycle (beginning, middle, and end) and they are working on retelling a story making sure to use the words First, Next, Then, and Last. These are sequencing words which will help them establish order in their writing and retelling of stories.
  • In reading we are working to identify the main idea of a text using supporting details. Students are learning that the main idea should be clear to them if they are understanding their reading and that this will also help them focus their writing as well if they know the main idea they are writing about.
  • In Writing we are working on writing a complete paragraph properly. We are using the hamburger model (see the image below) and have practiced in class. For the rest of the school year our writing will be in this format. This will be a part of the Spelling Mastery test Writing as well as their Writing time assigned in class. Students will also be assigned a homework writing assignment for this Unit of Inquiry writing at home using what we have learned in class (Please see managebac for details on this homework assignment)
  • We are also exploring collective nouns, adjectives, and working through our Spelling word mastery for grade 2! Students should be able to read, spell, and write using their grade level words. For Spelling Mastery, We will also be implementing challenge words- You can see the challenge word for the week on managebac assigned for each mastery assignment. Students should study this word on their own and will have the chance to spell it on the assessment. Please note that when your students have mastered all of the grade level words for second grade they will advance to grade level three words.

Science & Social Studies


Our study into the life of animals, insects and plants is well on its way. We have explored the mammal's life cycle through Smore, Now we are exploring and observing the reptiles life cycle with our visiting turtles representing the reptile animal class. And we will be adding even more members to our class very soon...... Here is a hint- it will be from the bird family! We have explored many different life cycles not just of insects but also animals, plants, and humans. Students Will be comparing our research of human, plant, and animal life cycles to those existing thousands of years ago. We will learned that many living things were a lot larger (including Adam A.S.) and science has shown that this is due to the amount of oxygen that was available at that time. Students will also recall that Adam and Huwa had a different life cycle than the rest of mankind (as they were created as a grown adult- they were not born). Students are continuing to wait for our new visitors to join us!

Social Studies:

  • In Social Studies students have been discussing words and word meanings as research. They are making connections to prior knowledge and new vocabulary by listening, reading, and responding to new information. We are using our Social Studies skills this term and really exploring how to differentiate and classify new information and figuring how to apply this to our lives. Students will be exploring agencies that help animals (humane Society, Veterinary Clinics, and Animal Rehabilitation)

  • Students have been learning about the life cycle of plants, recognizing the parts of the plants in Arabic and learning the vocabulary of what does the plants need to grow. students realized the miracle of the growing cycle of the plants and how should we be thinkers about the creations of Allah through surah Az-Zumar 21أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ أَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَسَلَكَهُ يَنَابِيعَ فِي الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ يُخْرِجُ بِهِ زَرْعًا مُّخْتَلِفًا أَلْوَانُهُ ثُمَّ يَهِيجُ فَتَرَاهُ مُصْفَرًّا ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُهُ حُطَامًا ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَذِكْرَىٰ لِأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ

  • students are reading books about different life cycles of living things, which is improving their reading skills and enriching their Arabic vocabulary.we use this web site (دودة عجيبة) that you can use for more fun reading time at home.
  • Students are decorating an Islamic calendar to learn the Islamic Months
  • (محرم- صفر – ربيع الأول- ربيع الثاني- جماد الأول – جماد الثاني).
  • students are learning the ordinal numbers from 16th-20th.

Contrast and patterns in tribal rugs

Students Worked in pairs to create a representation of a colorful tribal rug, they reused some black placemats as the painting surface.
They used acrylic to paint parallel horizontal stripes that will work as the background for the tribal rug.
They made sure to coordinate their work in terms of the use of color and space.
The students observed the colors synergy, and how contrast is an important principle that is essential to differentiate and balance an artwork palette.

After completing the background for the tribal rug representation,the students painted a variety of geometric designs on the stripes.
They observed how repetition created balance and interest, they were also introduced to the notion of unity in variety.


During this unit students will engage in various activities using our newest piece of PE equipment, the scooter board! Scooter boards are great for core strengthening, upper body strengthening, coordination, and endurance. Not to mention, they are super fun to play on! We will be practicing different types of relays and games to provide some new challenges while keeping the entire class active.

Box Tops: Our next Submission is going to be Due Friday February 23rd for our last submission of the year! We will still collect box tops for the remainder of the year however the box tops sent in after February 23rd, 2018 will go towards the next school year. Please send in your box tops!

Scholastic Book Orders: Our next scholastic Book order will be due February 26th- You can Order Online using the class code PW3TF. I am excite to get new booksfor the class and I will be able to use my class points this order to get more books! Keep an eye out for what we are able to order!

Zearn: Students do not have assigned work in Zearn however I encourage students to still complete Zearn at home. This month we are working in Module 4 so students can be following along with the lessons at home. This is not something that I will assign however for parents who want students to get the extra practice this is a great way to extend what we are learning in math! We are also using zearn in the classroom as well.

Reading A-Z: Students use reading A to Z in the classroom as well as at home- Please be sure that you are keeping track of the homework however even when there is not an assigned homework students can explore the library and read- especially if they want to find books outside of their comfort zone by working on their genre challenge (Due March 31, 2018 with their reading log)
