Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight of the Week- Oscar De La Hoya
Oscar De La Hoya is a Mexican-American born on February 4, 1973. De La Hoya is a former professional boxer who, in 2002, also became a boxing promoter and, in 2018, a mixed martial arts promoter. As a boxer, he competed from 1992 to 2008, winning multiple world titles in six weight classes, including the lineal championship in three weight classes. De La Hoya is ranked as the 11th best boxer of all time. De La Hoya was nicknamed "The Golden Boy of boxing" by the media when he represented the United States at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Shortly after having graduated from James A. Garfield High School, he won a gold medal in the lightweight division, and reportedly "set a sport back on its feet." He is the first American of Mexican descent to own a national boxing promotional firm, and one of the few boxers to take on promotional responsibilities while still active.

National Bullying Prevention Month
October is National Bullying Prevention month. This month students are encouraged to wear orange on October 23rd for Unity Day. We are also Celebrating inclusion and acceptance by promoting Mix Up @Lunch Day on October 22nd where students are encouraged to sit with a new friend at lunch!
Last week, Officer Huski and the Counselors met with all students to talk more about Bullying Prevention, including David’s Law on Cyberbullying through guidance!
David’s Law (SB 179)
The state passed a bill in regards to bullying which went into effect September 1, 2017. The major change from the previous legislation is that it now covers cyberbullying, and the definition of bullying has expanded to include even one instance of aggression toward another person. Much of this redefined bullying legislation affects us as educators and how we identify, prevent, and handle occurrences of bullying.
Please educate yourselves on this law and the changes from the original definition of the word. It is important to visit and or reiterate with your student the importance of not posting hurtful things about people, as this can become a disciplinary issue at school as well as a legal problem if it’s serious enough. Below is a link that highlight the changes to the Texas Education Code that is now State Bill 179 “David’s Law”. http://www.legis.state.tx.us/tlodocs/85R/billtext/html/SB00179F.htm

FLL Robotics- Volunteers Wanted!
CTMS FLL Robotics Teams are in need of volunteers from area businesses and the community! Our competition that we compete in December has a different theme every year, and this year’s theme is City Shaper. We need volunteers from any businesses, or community organizations who are willing to come in to our practices and help our Team Members build their robots, work on strategies to accomplish missions with their robots, help them with teamwork, work on a Community Intervention Project- including developing ideas for this project, and provide them with feedback on their work and presentations. Lego and FLL who govern our competitions encourage our Teams to get feedback and involvement with a variety of other groups outside school, so any and all volunteers from many backgrounds, not just tech or robotics are encouraged, and there is no experience in programming or robotics required. Most of what our Teams need are just adults willing to help them, give them ideas, moral support, and feedback. If you are interested in volunteering or know a Community Group, Area Business, or Organization that is willing to send a volunteer from time to time to help our teams, please have them contact our sponsor Mr. Nate Dunn at: nate.dunn@gcisd.net or (817) 456-7775
We practice once a weekly afterschool from 3:30- 5 p.m. and daily during Wolf Time from 1:55-2:35 p.m. Any and all help is welcome, volunteering especially, but if groups would like to donate money to support our teams, we certainly welcome that type of assistance as well! Nurse's Corner
Thank you in advance for keeping your student at home when they are sick! Staying home when you are ill, good hand washing habits, and getting the flu shot yearly are important in helping keep our community healthy and safe!
*** Students must be free of fever, vomiting, or diarrhea for AT LEAST 24 hours without fever-reducing medication before returning to school.
Frequent hand washing also helps prevent the spread of germs. Wiping down commonly shared surfaces such as door handles, sinks, and keyboards can also help prevent the spread of germs. If you missed getting the flu shot it’s not too late. Flu season can continue into spring, so getting vaccinated now may help prevent illness over Spring Break!
Immunizations (Tdap & MCV)
Parents: Please make sure I have a copy of your child’s most recent immunization record. You can check in their Skyward account or contact me or your physician if you have any questions regarding what your child needs. In order to enter 7th grade, they will be required to have Tdap and MCV immunizations. These immunizations are usually given at the 11-year-old child checkup. Please contact Nurse Flowers if have any questions at 817-251-5337 or karol.flowers@gcisd.net. If you would like to know the specific statute that pertains to this requirement, please see the following link. Texas Administrative Code, Title 25, Part I, Chapter 97, Subchapter B, Section 97.66 and 97.69).
