Character Education Message from Principal Sunshine...
Each month our school focuses on a character trait that will support students' social and emotional intelligence. Last month our character trait was 'respect.' Students learned what Respect looks like, sounds like and feels like to others and themselves. It is important that we educate students in both academics and character to help children grow into successful adults. We want to share our efforts at school, so you can use the same language with your children at home.
"Stop-Walk-Talk," teaches students the difference between problem behavior and bullying, and how to respond if other students are using inappropriate or bullying behavior towards them or other students. If your child comes home and shares a problem with you that they had with another student at school, you can ask them if they used these three easy steps to try to solve their problem.
1. STOP
First, it is important for students to learn to use their words and tell others to “stop.” If the problem continues then...
2. WALK
Most problems can be avoided if one person walks away from the problem. When a student walks away, they take away the other student’s power and sends the message that they won’t be treated unkindly.
But, if the problem continues...
3. TALK
Students need to go and talk to an adult to help solve their problem.
One important exception to the “Stop-Walk-Talk,” sequence is when a student is in danger or unsafe language is used. In this case, students are told to immediately tell an adult. By encouraging students to use Stop-Walk-Talk, we hope that students will feel like they have tools to deal with problem behaviors, get in trouble less often, and feel safer at school.
Please feel encouraged to reach out to your child's teacher and our administrators if you or your child needs more support with problem solving or if an incident is unsolved.
