Safety First: Wear your Student ID - All Day - Every Day

Students: READ your EMAIL...

Attention Students: Please read your email at least once per day, important communications regarding your classes, registration, Activities Office, and other announcements are shared with you daily.

Hello PHS!

In keeping with a safe and orderly environment we would like to remind students and families that daily attendance matters and as you know, attendance is a significant factor when discussing student achievement. The more a student is absent, the chance that they may fall behind in classes and/or fail and not be on track to graduate increases. We also understand that students get sick, have family emergencies, and sometimes life just happens - this is where we need your assistance. It is essential to follow the steps below from the student handbook, if your student will be absent, late, or leaving early from PHS:

  • If a student is absent from school, it is necessary that the parent/guardian call the school office before 8:30am the following school day - 319.848.5360

  • If a parent/guardian does not call before 8:30 the following morning, the absence may become unexcused

  • Parent/guardians will receive notification up to 3 times per day when their student is marked absent and NOT excused by a parent/guardian

When students are tardy to school or are present in the building but tardy to class the following guidelines are followed:

Tardy to 1st Period

Students are expected to be in class and ready to begin when the bell rings.

  1. Once the bell rings, staff close and lock classroom doors and begin class.

  2. All students late to PHS will scan in, using their Student ID, at the Main Entrance, will then be issued a Tardy Unexcused (TU) pass from security, and will report directly to class.

  3. Teachers will mark attendance in Campus as Tardy Unexcused (TU) and note the time of arrival.

  4. Any student more than 15 minutes late to class will be marked Absent Unexcused (AU) and staff will note the time of arrival.

Tardy to Periods 2 through 8

Students are expected to be in class and ready to begin when the bell rings.

  1. Once the bell rings, staff close and lock classroom doors and begin class.

  2. All late students who are unexcused must report to the Attendance Office for a Tardy Unexcused (TU) pass.

  3. Students are expected to report to class within 3 minutes after the TU pass is issued.

  4. Once a student reports to class WITH a TU pass, teachers will need to update attendance in Campus to reflect this.

*If a student is arriving to class late with a Tardy Excused (TE) pass, they are admitted into class and a note is made in Campus indicating their arrival time and who issued the pass.

Student Responsibilities

  1. Report to ALL classes ON TIME!

  2. All students, late to PHS, will scan in, using their Student ID, at the Main Entrance, will be issued a Tardy Unexcused (TU) pass from security, and will report directly to class.

  3. If a student is Tardy Unexcused (TU) for periods 2-8, the student must report to the Attendance Office for a Tardy Unexcused (TU) pass.

  4. Students are expected to report to class within 3 minutes after the TU pass has been issued.

Closed and Locked Door Policy

This means doors are CLOSED and LOCKED when the bell rings to:

  1. Provide additional protection and a safer school environment.

  2. Minimize classroom interruptions for students who have shown up on time and are prepared for class.

  3. Establish clear and consistent expectations throughout the building.

It is everyone's responsibility to be a leader, to care for and support each other, and work together to ensure success for all students.

Be Safe and Have a Great week!

Ms. Thies, Principal

CHECK THIS OUT - the PHS Assignment Page...

The PHS Assignment Page is a single-stop reference for students and families to stay up to date on what is happening in all classrooms. On the PHS Assignment Page teachers provide a weekly update of daily assignments, long-term assignments and projects, and upcoming assessments.

For a more detailed understanding of what is happening in an individual classroom, please talk to your student or reach out to their teacher. Need assistance enrolling in the "Guardian View" of Google Classroom? Individual teachers can assist with this too.

College and Career Transition...

FAFSA Completion Challenge

Prairie High School is challenging the Class of 2022 to reach or exceed the state of Iowa's FAFSA completion rate from last year. Last year, 61% of Iowa seniors completed the FAFSA. I am confident the Class of 2022 can crush this goal. Game on, Class of 2022. We got this!

Pro Tip! Complete the FAFSA by December 21st, 2021 and be entered into a raffle to win gift cards to local shops and restaurants, college swag or the grand prize of FREE Prom tickets! Have questions or need help? Contact Ms. Rawson at nrawson@crprairie.org or schedule a meeting here.

Seniors, have you been accepted to college? Enlisted in the military?

Enrolled in an apprenticeship program?

We want to celebrate your accomplishments by announcing your acceptances, enlistments, and enrollments over the loudspeaker each Thursday for the entire school to hear! You've worked hard, celebrate it. To have your accomplishments announced, please complete this Class of 2022 Post-Secondary Celebrations form for each acceptance or enlistment or enrollment. Entries received by 1:00pm on Wednesdays will be announced on Thursday.

Please note: We know many of you do not yet know where you will be attending or what you will be doing after high school. That's okay! These announcements are simply to celebrate the options you have right now. Later in the spring, we will celebrate your post-secondary decisions.
