Aiming to Keep You Informed
DECEMBER 3, 2021
From the Office
This week, our students have found wonderful ways to support others. On Wednesday, Mrs. Metzger and our Westfield Band visited DuJardin and Erickson to entertain the younger grades as part of their holiday tour! In addition, this week our school-wide Food & Toy drive began. Thank you to everyone who has contributed! Your generosity is truly appreciated and we know that many members of our community will be grateful for your support. Next week, our Interact Club will be visiting Sunrise Senior Living. Some great examples of why we are so proud to be WARRIORS!
Westfield Food & Toy Drive - Last chance to donate!
Westfield is asking all students, parents, and staff to pull together to support our local Food Pantry and Toy Shop organized by the Bloomingdale Township. Our collection period ends on December 7th. Please consider joining our effort to support needy families in our community! Please see the Westfield Food & Toy Drive flyer for more information.
Report Cards
Next week, Report Cards will go home in the mail and parents/guardians of 6th & 7th grade students will receive an emailed version of the Otus report card as well.
Hallway Lockers & Locks
Next week, we will begin issuing locks to all students who have purchased one. If you have not purchased a Westfield lock, please do so by using either PushCoin or having your child bring a check to the office in the amount of $5.oo.
Starting the week of December 13th, students will be asked to secure their belongings in their locker with a school issued lock. We will review locker usage expectations and lock distribution with students prior to the official start date.
Locker usage between classes will remain optional and students will still be allowed to carry a backpack to class at this time if they prefer. We will require all students to secure their lockers even if they only use them for jackets and lunches, due to the fact that all students will have access to the locker bays throughout the school day.
Fall MAP Testing - Next week
- Dates: Tuesday, December 7th, and Wednesday, December 8th.
- Testing on both days will take place in the morning between 8:30 and 11:35am.
- Lunch (period 5) remains the same time: 11:38 - 12:22.
- Afternoon classes on 12/7 will run 1, 2, 3 & 4
- Afternoon classes on 12/8 will run the normal line-up of 6, 7, 8, & 9
- Links from NWEA MAP that you may find useful: Parent FAQ & MAP Fact Sheet
Please remind students to fully charge their chromebooks at night, bring their charger with to school, bring plug-in headphones/earbuds, get a good night's rest, and eat a healthy breakfast.
Teachers will provide students with specific details regarding the testing format, times, breaks and locations. If possible, please avoid student absences on testing days. Thank you!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Otus: Student Progress for 6th & 7th Grade Parents
How Parents Can Log in to Otus:
- Sign in to Otus (if you have not set up your family account, please follow the directions in this video or this article to do so.)
- PLEASE READ FIRST: Your student already has an Otus account from the school district. To avoid confusion, it's best to use your own name rather than your student's name when creating the Family account. Both the video and the article have the same information. Please view whichever is more convenient for you.
- (If you have created your family account, but need to connect your student's code, have your child log in to Otus and click Edit Profile. Their student code is located at the bottom of that page.)
- To check your child's progress on Otus, click on Gradebook, then choose which class you would like to see progress in.
- To check your child's completed assignments on Otus, click on Gradebook, then click the three dots in the top right corner to change the "Grading Scale" to "Completion Scale."

Students Will Need Their P.E. Shirt for Gym Class Every Day
- Students are required to wear their uniform shirts for P.E. class each day. This year, the students are only required to change into a P.E. shirt. However, they do have the option to purchase P.E. shorts, bring their own athletic shorts, or simply wear the pants/shorts they wear to school that day. [Students now have their own gym lockers with locks.]
- P.E. shirts and shorts are $10 each and can be purchased throughout the school year by writing a check to Westfield Middle School or paying with $10 cash and having your child give the payment to their PE teacher.

School Improvement Goals for 2021-2022
On Monday, 10/25, we presented our School Improvement (SIP) goals to the D13 Board of Education (BOE). This year, our 3 main areas of focus are: Student Academic Success, Social-Emotional Learning, and Standards-Based Grading. If you would like to see more details related to our goal areas, the metrics used to measure each area, and the supports we have in place, please reference this SIP slideshow used as part of our SIP presentation to the BOE.
Quarantining due to Close Contact
A Close Contact is anyone with whom the confirmed COVID case had close contact, within 3 feet, for at least 15 minutes throughout the course of 24 hours. Exposure on a bus must include everyone who sat within 3 feet of the confirmed or probable COVID case for 15 minutes or longer. At lunch, with masks removed, close contacts are anyone within 6 feet for 15 minutes or longer.
Westfield Middle School does not have to exclude all students in a classroom from attending school because a student in the classroom tested positive for COVID...Only those students who were Close Contacts with the confirmed student will be required to quarantine for 14 days. It is important for students to wear a mask & maintain 3-feet of social distance from others at all times.
If your child is quarantining at home:
A Remote Learning Support Teacher (RLST) will provide two and a half hours (2 ½) of daily contact for students using Google Meets.
A RLST will email each student and their parent/guardian with the link to join the support sessions.
Students are expected to work independently on their school work in conjunction with the 2 ½ hours of direct contact they receive from our RLST.
- Student work will be made available by each of their classroom teachers.
- Students and their parents/guardians should stay in regular contact with each teacher to determine the best method to access materials and resources.
- Individual teachers may exempt students from portions of the work that is missed or provide alternative activities for lessons that are difficult to recreate at home.
- Students will receive extended time to complete school work upon their return to the classroom.
