Information for DLBHS Students
Lakers, here are details about the coming weeks
Dear Laker Students,
We are so excited to be able to continue the school year during this time when it is so important to reduce the risk of COVID-19 contamination, but we are sad that we won’t see you in class each day. We have all been working hard to put together a plan that will allow you to finish the year with the credits you are registered for in a way that is interesting, effective, and reasonable.
As you have probably noticed, all of your teachers have set up Google Classrooms. These will be the places where you get your information, assignments, instructions, and opportunities to interact with your classmates! If you haven’t checked your dlblakers.com email account, please do so as soon as possible so you can join all of your classrooms!
We are also sending you a copy of a newsletter that we sent to parents this past Friday. It has Google Classroom Codes for all classes. You should receive this newsletter by 2:00 today (Sunday, 3.22.2020).
This letter provides a summary of what you will need to do to make sure that you meet the requirements for attendance and participation each day. We are also including a few organization tools for you to use if you think they will be useful! We know that many of you are already organization and daily planner pros!
We know this is a big change, and your teachers and the administration are all here to provide as much help as you need. You can always contact your teacher by email or call the school office with any questions you might have.
While we would MUCH rather be seeing you in the school, we are very happy that we have the opportunity to learn with you in the coming weeks in this new format we call distance learning.
More than anything, we hope you are well, that you take good care of yourself, and that you are excited about continuing to learn in a new way that will go down in history as the time when you kept going to school – even during a pandemic!
ATTENDANCE
To record your attendance each day, you must go to your Laker Time Google Classroom. There will be a form that you fill out EVERY DAY by 7:00 p.m. to indicate that you are in attendance. If you do not complete this form, you will be counted as absent.
This procedure will begin Tuesday morning, and your Laker Time teacher will provide the necessary information.
If you are sick, you should call the office as you have always done.
Attendance will be recorded in PowerSchool by 8:15 the following day. For example Tuesday, you will record your attendance on the Form in your Laker Time group by 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. By Wednesday morning at 8:15, your Laker Time teacher will record whether you were present or absent. If you respond to the form after 7:00, you will need to contact Mr. Medalen to see whether you can be counted as present.
PARTICIPATION
In addition to recording your attendance, you will need to show that you are participating in your classes. There are multiple ways to do this.
- Attend the two scheduled synchronous meetings each week (30 minutes each
- Check into your Google classrooms each day and complete the daily activities
- You will receive two graded assignments each week. Make sure they are completed and submitted according to your teachers’ instructions
- Send an email to your teacher with questions, clarifications, and updates about your work.
CONTACTING YOUR TEACHER
Teachers will be available to answer questions, provide guidance, and offer clarification during the hours of 8:30 to 3:30 on school days. Teachers will answer email questions as quickly as possible during school hours. If you email a teacher after 3:30, they will respond to you no later than the next school day morning.
EXPECTATIONS OF TIME
The teachers are building their lessons with the expectation that you will spend about 30 minutes a day for each class and four hours a day overall. This might vary slightly depending on how focused you are on your work, how many interruptions you have, etc. Of course, you can always spend MORE time working, but 30 minutes per class and 4 hours per day is the general expectation.

SYNCHRONOUS (at the same time) CLASS MEETINGS
Each class will meet synchronously (at the same time) twice a week according to the schedule below. Synchronous meetings will usually be in the form of a video meeting, but there might also be times when you collaborate as a class through the Classroom stream or a shared Google Document, Slides, or another format.
We highly recommend that students attend the classes in person, but we know that there are a variety of responsibilities that might prevent students from attending all of the classes at the scheduled time. In the event that you cannot make the meeting in person, you will have access to a recording, which you should watch as soon as possible. If you have questions, you can contact your teacher by email.
Your teacher will provide instructions and links in your Google classroom about how you should join the meeting, how to watch the recording and any other details that you need.
SAMPLE DAILY SCHEDULE
This is what your day might look like, but with this distance-learning format, you have a LOT of flexibility in how you organize your day. If this schedule doesn’t work for you, you can rearrange the times that are not highlighted in Gray (indicates reporting attendance by 7:00 p.m. each day) or Blue (synchronous learning times that will also be recorded.)
WEEKLY LAKER PLANNER
We hope this weekly planner will help you to keep track of when assignments are due and scheduled synchronous class meeting times. We filled in the synchronous class times for you.
Check your Google Classroom frequently for details, links and other information.
Feel free to print out and use. We will also make down loadable copies available for you in Google Classroom.
