Reading Workshop
We started reading workshop off this week by reading the story Miss. Malarkey Leaves no Readers Behind. This is a great book that discusses how to find the "just right" book and keeping track of the books you read. We then discussed "real" reading vs. "fake" reading. We talked about the benefits of "real" reading and how it helps us to understand what we are reading better. We worked on practicing our "real" reading with the books that we checked out from the Hinkle Creek library. I told the students that I would take pictures of all of the "real" readers in our class. Wow! I was able to take a picture of everyone ( see the pic collage below). In addition to this, we discussed the benefits of visualizing and sketching notes about the books we are reading. We are each keeping a sketchbook about the story, One and Only Ivan. We were able to compare our sketches with each other and really look at how each one of us visualized the story. Next week we will begin looking at the story structure of fiction books and practicing jotting down our thinking while we read. I will also begin benchmarking their reading.
* Just a reminder, we will visit the library on Monday

Writing Workshop
This week during our writing workshop we continued to work on our writing stamina. We also discussed the writing process and how it benefits writers. Most of us in the classroom have been writing books that copy one of our favorite books. We learned that these are called parodies. We then had the chance to read Mrs. Berak's previous class book parody- Diary of the IPad. The students last year wrote this book for our class. In addition to this, we worked on writing complete sentences and identifying the subject and predicate in sentences. Next week we will be looking at the revising/editing part of the writing process and practicing peer revisions. We will also continue practicing complete sentences.

Several students took advantage of looking at previous 3rd Grade author books.
Math Workshop
We began math workshop this week with a number hunt to see how many numbers or math related items we could find in our classroom. We also reviewed several concepts including counting coins, telling time to the nearest 5 minute, and number patterns. In addition to this, we worked on using the number grid to help us add and subtract. Next week we will begin looking at equivalent names, the language of chance events, and finding differences.

The One and Only Ivan Book Club
Hello everyone!
Thank you to all who have agreed to join us with reading The One and Only Ivan. I now have the schedule that we will be following. Please see below for our pacing guide. I have added discussion boards (padlets) for each discussion. You will just need to click on the date and it will take you to a padlet where you can type your response to the question posted on the board. We will be using these in class and adding our thinking to the boards, as well. I have also included dates where you may join us for an in-class discussion. Let me know if you need help getting the book. I really appreciate you joining us!
