A Message from Mr OhEithir

Adjustments Ahead...

Dear Whittier Families,

Our staff debriefed this week about our parent teacher conferences. We are so grateful for the partnership and the positive energy that parents and teachers shared in working through some learning challenges and successes together. Our teachers really felt supported and we hope you did too.

We held conferences with 652 of our 691 students' families. We would love to have all 691. If you missed yours, please contact your child's teacher as soon as possible.

A great benefit of conferencing together is that we learn each others' perspectives and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for both teaching and parenting. If we learn nothing else during this time, let's appreciate how important it is to be on the same side, which is the side of children's learning and growth.

Making Some Adjustments

While some students are really doing very well in some aspects of virtual learning, others are having some difficulty keeping up with their assignments. We want to recognize and honor this by doing a couple of things this coming week, the last week of the marking period in Quarter One, that will hopefully help a little.

We are going to provide space for students to catch up on a few priorities while we take stock of our instruction and make some adjustments for Quarter Two. Let's call it catching a breath.

Week of November 2-6:

Monday 2nd - regular school day for all grades

Tuesday 3rd - Election Day (schools closed)

Wednesday 4th - Catch-up Day for Grades 1 and 3 (all others, regular school day)

Thursday 5th - Catch-up Day for Grades 4 and 5 (all others, regular school day)

Friday 6th - Catch-up Day for Grades K and 2 (all others, regular school day)

What Happens on a Catch-up Day exactly?

Student priorities:

- catch up on missing specials assignments in Art, Music, and PE

- complete your units in Lexia

- catch up on missing classroom assignments

- attend your synchronous Specials class

Staff Priorities:

- participate in a full day of professional learning

- plan adjustments to instruction for Quarter 2 based on parent feedback and student needs

- plan for each individual students' goals and targets in Lexia

- work together to improve learning for students in the quarter ahead

I sincerely hope that having an opportunity to catch up on a few things will be helpful. It is apparent to me that many of our families could use a catch-up day right now, and hopefully you agree and will find it beneficial.

I trust you will let me know if you have feedback or suggestions. I am always willing to listen.

Be well,

Lorcan OhEithir, Principal
