The Mustang Round Up
December 4, 2022
Stay focused Mustangs...
This week our counseling office is partnering with the SRHS counseling team to present 8th grade families important information about the articulation process to high school (More information is below). This had me thinking, "Wow, are we already thinking about next year?" Absolutely. It was a good reminder for myself and our students that if they haven't already, now is the time to be thinking about next year and how decisions we make today will have an impact on what happens next year. During this time of the year, it's easy to forget that the next few weeks are going to be important for student's first semester grades. Consider this, we have two more weeks until Winter Break and then we return to school in January with only 3 weeks left before the first semester ends. Now is a perfect time to re-organize and recommit to finishing the semester strong. It is such an exciting time of the year with holiday parties and activities planned at school, which makes it even more important for students to take moment to reflect on their goals for the year and strategize how to finish the semester strong academically.
Stay focused Mustangs!

In addition to supporting our students, the Marshall Mustang Organization is dedicated to year round teacher and staff appreciation.
This Fall, the MMO hosted a Spa/Relaxation Day. Open classrooms were converted to Relaxation Rooms. Instructors and interns from the Pacific College of Health and Science provided MMS Teachers and Staff massage therapy and/or acupuncture. Yogurt parfaits were available throughout the day in the lounge. This was one of the many appreciation events planned for this school year.
The MMO is an all volunteer organization funded by generous donations from our community. To learn how to get involved, email Kelly Melancon at marshallmustangpresident@gmail.com.
Donations can be made online at https://mmsfoundation.com/donate. All levels of support are welcome and much appreciated!
The Marshall Mustang Organization is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization (Tax ID #82-1487473). Your donation qualifies as a tax-deductible charitable gift. Receipts provided upon request. Email marshalldonation@gmail.com for more information.

Who's Who at Marshall...
MMS is excited to introduce you to PE Teacher, Janel McCarthy. Mrs. McCarthy is one of our most committed and passionate teachers. Even though she teaches mostly 7th and 8th grade classes, she volunteered to chaperone 6th grade camp this year. Kids say they love being in her class because of her energy, positivity, and kindness. Here's a little more about Coach McCarthy:
How many years in education? I started teaching in the San Diego Unified School District in 1995 so I have been teaching for 27 years and I've been teaching PE at Marshall for 15 years.
Why middle school?- I taught high school before I came to MMS because I wanted to coach. I coached varsity field hockey and soccer at Mira Mesa High School. After having two kids, I decided to try teaching middle school and LOVE IT!
What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend? I like to travel and enjoy spending time with my family. We spend a lot of vacations in Hawaii and I like going to the beach, hiking, paddle boarding, and kayaking. Also, I enjoy listening to music, walking my dog, watching sunsets, and spending time with family and friends.
What impact do you hope to make at Marshall? I hope to teach MMS students the importance of living a healthy lifestyle both physically and mentally through exercise and movement, and help students become self-motivated, responsible, and confident individuals.

Some Things to Consider...
Researchers from Stanford recently reported that teen brains have aged faster as a result of the pandemic. While conducting a longitudinal study on the structures of teen brains over multiple years, researchers compared brain imaging from teens before and after the pandemic and saw uncharacteristic growth in regions of the brain that regulate fear and stress. They also saw an impact on the regions controlling executive functioning. Both occur during adolescence, however the rate of change appears to have accelerated when comparing to typical models of brain maturation. This article discusses not only the research implications of the Stanford study, but emphasizes the need for more attention and action in regards to working with mental health and well-being of teens.
