Children are Maggots
In the story of Matilda, there is one evil headmistress. Her name is Mrs. Trunchbull. Her school motto is "Children are Maggots". Her claim-to-fame is punishing children by placing them in a room called "the Chokey" - a tiny pitch-black room, lined with spikes so you can't sit down. She's a pretty terrible lady.
However, Matilda knows that if she's not happy with a situation, she can change it. Her love of books inspires her to "rewrite the ending". After gathering up the support of her fellow students and staging a revolt, the students end up having Mrs. Trunchbull thrown out of the school and their favorite teacher, Ms. Honey takes over! VICTORY!
Now's a good time to start thinking about how you want to write the ending of this school year. What are you going to revolt against? Perhaps kids are talking too much when you're teaching. Perhaps you don't feel as if kids have enough opportunities for movement and play? Perhaps you're going to ensure that all of your children leave your classroom better equipped to handle the next grade!
What's the moral of today's story? Don't be like Mrs. Trunchbull. Don't be a bully. Simply take inspiration from Matilda and rewrite your own ending!
And for those of you who appreciate a little musical theater... here's a clip from one of my favorite scenes!
