Northwest High School Families,
First, a special Happy Mother's Day to all the moms, grandmothers, caregivers and guardians in all the Northwest community. We appreciate all you do every day for all of us and for that, today is all about you! We hope you all have had a wonderful day and weekend!
This week is a full, five-day week and is interim week for grades 9-11 which means we are halfway through the last marking period of the year! Students should be sure to continue to focus on finishing strong and reaching out for support as needed.
A note about Final Transcript Requests: The college you plan to attend will require a FINAL HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT. FINAL TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS
can be made using this google form (https://forms.gle/rbJryDqCkutjcBS68). There is NO CHARGE for this transcript. Final Transcripts will not be available until mid-July.
A reminder to Senior Parents! The Senior Letter was sent to last week explaining everything pertinent to the end of the school year. Please review it and reach out if you have any questions.
A reminder about the media center in the coming weeks. Because it is being used for testing throughout the first two (2) weeks of May, it is important that all students:
- Bring your Chromebook to school with a full charge
- If you have any tech issues (not charging issues) please go to the main office and ask that they call Mr. Oladapo for support
- Books or other issues can be handled in the media center after testing is over

What are your plans for after graduation? Take the Naviance Senior Survey by May 20!
Northwest High School and Montgomery County Public Schools would like to know the post-secondary plans and scholarships offered to each graduating class. A survey has been created in Naviance to capture college destinations, career plans and scholarships awarded. This Naviance survey should take 10 to 20 minutes to complete. Completing the survey by May 20 is a checklist item for the graduating class of 2022!
Access the survey in your Naviance | Student account. Easy instructions to access and complete the survey can be found @ https://bit.ly/3kEWBGR. Seniors can access the survey even if they don’t remember their Naviance username and password!
Complete the survey by May 20! Information reported from the survey will not be student specific. Information provided in the survey will be released as part of Montgomery County Public Schools end-of-year data reporting.
MCPS INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY: Web Services is working on some exciting projects this summer and we are seeking an intern to help out. In return, the student will earn SSL hours and gain experience working on public-facing websites in a dynamic office environment. We are looking for candidates with HTML, CSS and/or Photoshop skills to work in our Rockville office (actual hours are flexible). The ideal candidate would be a student who is interested in front-end website design and content organization. Interested students should email a resume and a brief note indicating their availability and web background to webmaster@mcpsmd.org. Indicate whether interested in interning this summer or for the 2022-2023 school year.

REMINDER: In support of the MCPS Out of School Time programs, Lead ‘Em Up is offering two free virtual leadership sessions. Join Adam Bradley, leadership coach, to prepare for leadership roles applied in school, athletics, and all other aspects of your personal and future professional life. NEW for the Class of 2022: Have you heard the news? The University of Arizona’s Fall 2022 application deadline has been extended to June 1, 2022! Students still have plenty of time to submit their applications to the University of Arizona and be considered for our First-Year Merit Awards!
- The personal statement is optional

NEW: Maryland Special Education Parent Involvement Survey
Each year, The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) conducts the Maryland Special Education Parent Involvement Survey of all parents/guardians of children receiving special education and related services. The purpose of the Survey is to measure the efforts made by school personnel during the school year, to partner with parents/guardians, and to promote parent/guardian involvement in their child’s education. Feedback helps to guide efforts to improve special education and related services. There are two versions of the Survey—one for parents of students who receive preschool special education services (ages 3 to kindergarten entry) and one for parents of students who are school-aged (kindergarten to 21). The Survey is anonymous. The Surveys were mailed to parents/guardians during the week of April 11, 2022. Parents/guardians have the option of returning the Survey they receive from MSDE in the prepaid postage envelope that arrived with their mailing, or completing the Survey online at www.mdparentsurvey.com. The Survey must be completed by Saturday, May 27, 2022.

It’s Teacher Appreciation Week
In MCPS, we celebrate all of our outstanding employees that work for our students but this week, we highlight teachers. Registration for Most MCPS Summer Programs Now Open
MCPS is offering free programs for elementary, middle and high school students this summer. Most programs will be in July, and high school credit courses and the Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO) program in Title I elementary schools will be offered in June, July and August. Generally, in-person programs will take place in the morning through midday. Afternoon programs sponsored by county and municipal agencies and outside providers will be available in some schools. REMINDER: New Agreement Signed Guiding Community Engagement Officer Program
Dear MCPS Community,
To ensure a safe, inclusive and positive learning environment for students and staff, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) and Montgomery County Government have signed a new agreement, known as a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), that enhances the program guiding support from law enforcement in county public schools.
After more than two years of pandemic restrictions, and virtual and hybrid learning, as well as everyday life challenges, students need social-emotional and mental health supports and positive relationship-building led by trusted adults, including our police partners. The Community Engagement Officer (CEO) Program is a necessary part of an informed, thoughtful and comprehensive response to address the safety of all students and staff. A safe and supportive environment is foundational to MCPS’ mission of an excellent teaching and learning environment.
This plan was informed by collaborative work between MCPD and MCPS and includes community input gathered through focus groups with students, staff, parents and multiple key community stakeholder groups.
Engagement activities included:
Ten age-appropriate student focus groups at all three levels in February and March.
A series of youth-police dialogues with MCPS and police representatives in each of the 10 police districts in Montgomery County.
A live virtual Community Conversation on Student Safety and Well-Being in December 2021 with nearly 1,000 participants.
Countywide student forums on Feb. 3 at all 70 secondary schools.
Ongoing parent focus groups at all high schools.
“The important social-emotional and mental health supports that we are putting in place along with this new agreement with our police partners is the right solution at this time,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Monifa B. McKnight. “We believe that these officers will be dependable and valuable members of our school communities.”
Police Chief Marcus Jones said, “This MOU allows for our department and our law enforcement partners to further our community policing objectives within and beyond the MCPS community. The Montgomery County Police Department is committed to the safety and security of all our MCPS staff, students and partners. This has been a genuine collaboration between all involved parties to listen to the needs of our community.”
Ruschelle Reuben, MCPS Chief of Teaching, Learning and Schools, said that the safety and security of students and staff is the district’s top priority. ”We will regularly monitor this program to ensure it is effective, and to identify any areas of improvement,” she said.. “We have held discussions with students, staff and families to make sure this plan represents a range of interests and opinions.”
The MOU also provides for an ongoing review of the program by a cross-functional team of students, staff, administrators, representatives from the Department of Health and Human Services and the police department.
CEOs will:
Work with all schools in their assigned cluster.
Participate in required MCPS professional development, including non-violent crisis intervention, and equity and culturally responsive engagement.
Have a direct line of communication and contact with the school and coordinate assistance at major school events, such as athletic events, large dances or other activities.
CEOs will not respond to routine school discipline incidents. These incidents are governed by discipline outlined in the MCPS Student Code of Conduct.
As a school principal, these new guidelines are the right balance for us. Having a more direct and collaborative relationship with our police partners will be beneficial,” said Dr. Leroy C. Evans, principal of Col. Zadok Magruder High School. “This connection in our schools will be something students and staff will see and we will derive a greater sense of security because of it.”

REMINDER: Change in COVID-19 Procedures/End of Contact Tracing
Dear MCPS Community,
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is making changes to the COVID-19 contact tracing process in schools to align with the recommendations of the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
Based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Maryland Department of Health (MDH), universal contact tracing is no longer necessary in schools and childcare programs.
While the virus continues to affect people in our community and across the nation, this change is possible because of the important work we have all undertaken to follow health guidelines, including vaccinations, that mitigate and minimize the spread of COVID-19.
Effective May 5, 2022:
MCPS will no longer identify or individually notify individuals who are in close contact with students or staff members who test positive for COVID-19.
Messages will be sent out at the classroom, grade or school level as appropriate to inform the community of positive cases at individual schools.
Daily cases by school will continue to be reported on the COVID-19 Dashboard.
We continue to work in collaboration with our county health partners and, in the event of an identified COVID-19 outbreak, we will conduct contact tracing and inform the school community of additional mitigation strategies, which may include mask-wearing and PCR or rapid testing on-site or at home. We will monitor the number of cases and adjust our strategy to ensure the health and safety of students, staff and communities.

REMINDER: Student Reminders for 2022 AP Testing
- NWHS gives AP exams in May according to the rules of the College Board.
- All exam rooms open at 7:30 AM (seating and organization) and begin at 8:00 AM or 11:30 AM and begin at 12 PM. There are no exceptions to start times. Please be early!
- If you have a conflict, you must alert your AP teacher and the AP coordinators as soon as possible to get set up for late or exemption testing. Conflicts would be out of area, graduation, or more than 2 exams at the same time or on the same day.
- You may leave for the day after your AM MORNING EXAM or come late to school for your PM AFTERNOON exam. You are responsible for transportation other than the normal bus schedule. IF YOU CHOOSE TO STAY IN SCHOOL ALL DAY, YOU MUST ATTEND YOUR CLASSES AS THERE IS NO LOCATION FOR YOU TO SIT IN THE BUILDING AND WAIT.
- You may only bring a BLACK or BLUE pen, pencils, calculator (if needed). Please verify you have the correct calculator with your AP teacher. All bags will have to be checked or brought to the front of the classroom. Your phones must be turned off and in your bag. You many not wear any smart devices. Consider locking items in your car to avoid checking and waiting for items to be returned.
- If you are taking 2 exams on one day, please bring snacks as there is limited time between testing. We will provide Pizza only for students who have back to back tests.
- Please dress in layers as you never know the temperature of your location in the building.
If you receive COLLEGE BOARD APPROVED ACCOMMODATIONS, you should have received a note with your testing locations. If you are not using your accommodations, please see Ms. Mason as soon as possible.

REMINDER: Tutoring Opportunities
We are pleased to announce that our honor societies have tutoring programs to assist students in their different courses. Students should fill out the google form or contact the sponsor directly to receive this service. Students will have access to this information on our school website as well.

Math Honor Society

Northwest Class Spirit!
It's a long-standing tradition at Northwest for each grade to wear their assigned CLASS COLOR on Pep Rally days! Each class sits in a designated section at the rallies so make an impact for YOUR CLASS by wearing your grade level color and make your presence known! Although participation with wearing class colors is optional, we hope you will join in the FUN!
The grade level colors are as follows:
Freshmen (Grade 9): YELLOW
Sophomores (Grade 10): GREEN
Juniors (Grade 11): RED
Seniors (Grade 12): BLUE
You can wear any clothing and/or accessories in your assigned color as long as you adhere to the school dress code. You can opt to wear clothing that you already own in your grade level color, you can purchase a shirt from the PTSA/Booster Club website for $4: http://www.nwhsptsa.org/shop (available sizes and quantities are limited), or you can purchase a T-shirt in your color at Michael's or Joanne's (the cost is usually around $4) and personalize with fabric markers or paint pens! The possibilities are endless to show your #JagPride!
