Principal’s Message
Spring Fling or Winter Fest?
Thank you to all the families that braved the cold at our first annual spring fling. Although it felt more like a winter fest, it certainly didn’t stop the students from jumping in the bubble machine. Be looking for a survey from the PTO about feedback for growth and improvement.
Our goal of the event was for families to be able to connect with one another.
By design, it is intended to be slightly different from a school carnival. Instead, we hope to have simple and engaging activities that allow both students and families to connect and engage with one another. We don’t want cost to be an inhibiting factor for families, so the PTO will carry the financial burden of providing the event. This is not our primary fundraiser, so we will continue to have it free to attend. For all of these reasons, we will continue to keep it simple, purposeful, and cost effective, while also improving the structure and activities. In this case bigger may not be better.
A very special thank you to Casey Mussio and Andrea Denman, the spring fling chairs who led the event. Thank you also to the PTO board, who along with the committee chairs, designed the event from the ground up. It’s not always easy to invent the wheel from scratch, but designing an event (big or small) always takes collaboration, communication, listening, and time - just like we teach our children. This certainly was a great model of those concepts in order to innovate and flexibly problem solve.
As we approach the end of the year, we will begin to plan for next year. Be thinking about ideas to help connect families throughout next year. That will be one of our school and PTO goals. We put a lot of time and effort into helping students connect, but the best schools communities have families that have great connections too. GRE already has a strong school community, but keeping connections at the forefront can never be a bad thing.
Sincerely,
Pete Kurty, Ed. D
