Allyship and Upstanders: Helping Students Speak Up Against Injustice and Hate

Thank you to ADL and author Liza Wiemer for speaking to our 8th grade students about Allyship and Upstanders: Helping Students Speak Up Against Injustice and Hate. Ms. Weimer has visited hundreds of schools, and she said that this was one of her most memorable and meaningful visits. We are pleased to accept a class set of Ms. Weimer's book, The Assignment, and look to incorporate it into the curriculum. Leah Thomas, an OPPA student, was presented with a one of a kind copy of the book. She was chosen by her teachers for this honor. Thank you, Mrs. Quigley, for partnering with the ADL and making this happen for our students.

Board Game Club

Board Game Club starts Tuesday, Nov 15th, from 3-4:30pm! We meet every other Tuesday. Please see Mr. G in room 100 for a permission slip!

Plot Elements and Figurative Language

Teacher: Ms. Brasseur

Class: ELA 6

In ELA 6, students are exploring plot elements and incorporating figurative language into our writing. To do this, the students wrote a story as a class. This activity required that students demonstrated their knowledge of elements of plot and figurative language. Students were divided into 6 teams and were assigned a part of the story, as well as a figurative language type that their team would be responsible for incorporating into their part. This activity not only required critical thinking but creative thinking as well, as each team were only given 4 minutes to build off the team before in order to write a cohesive story.

Literary Elements

Teacher: Mrs. Wright

Class: ELA 8

Students have made great use of the school and classroom libraries. They all have chosen books to read both in class and at home. Then, they created a one-pager book report focusing on literary elements. Here are some highlights:
