Final Newsletter of the School Year!
Mission Statement
Thank You
Dear St. John Families,
Wow! What a great year! Each school year brings about excitement and blessings different from years past, and this year proved to be no different. I have enjoyed every step along the way!
To our teachers and staff-- Thank you! Your selfless contributions to our parish and school are most appreciated. I continually receive praise and compliments on our student body. I am confident we are forming just, kind, well-rounded disciples ready to advocate for others and share Christ's love with the world. I am grateful to each of you for your support and perseverance.
To our parents-- Thank you for your continued support of our school and Catholic Education. Putting our mission into action each day wouldn't be possible without you as parent partners offering your trust, guidance and dedication each step of the way. I am grateful to each of you for you for allowing me to know and love your kiddos on this wonderful journey. I truly wouldn't want to call any other school "home." Have fun and make memories with your children over the summer! I am already anticipating the 19-20 school year and the great things God has in store for SJN!
Yours in Christ,
Natalie Johnson

Personnel Update
Dear SJN Families,
Tomorrow will be Mr. Tommy's final working day at SJN. Mr. Tommy is eager to begin a new role at Oklahoma Pediatric Therapy Center working specifically with behavioral therapy. Having been at St. John as a student and a staff member, Mr. Tommy has so much pride about St. John Nepomuk and the impact it has made in his life. We too are grateful to have him as part of our SJN family and history, and we wish him well and send him with our love and prayers.THANK YOU MR. TOMMY!
Sincerely,

Summer Reading and Math
Dear St. John Nepomuk Families,
In keeping with St. John Nepomuk Catholic School’s commitment to improving and enriching the reading and math skills of all of our students, we are excited to continue our required summer reading assignment for those students entering Pre-K 3 through eighth grade. We will also be continuing a Summer Math requirement for all students entering first through sixth grades. For students in grade 7 and 8, the placement of a student in our differentiated math courses will determine the requirement for summer math completion.
Summer Reading
Students will be required to complete the attached reading packet based on the grade that they will enter for the 2019-2020 school year. Directions and information are included in this packet and will be posted on the school website as well. The Summer Reading program must be completed no later than Monday, August 12, 2019. All summer reading assignments are available at bit.ly/2019summersjn.
It will be the student’s responsibility to obtain his or her own books whether they are from a library or bookstore. Students must demonstrate mastery of the summer reading by completing the attached assignments to show their comprehension of the books. Some teachers have included the Accelerated Reader Book Levels to help you in choosing titles appropriate for your child’s reading level. This is noted by the AR BL following the title. If you need further access to book levels, you might try http://www.arbookfind.com/UserType.aspx for further information.
Summer Math
St. John Nepomuk students entering grades 1st-7th Math and 8th grade Pre-Algebra will be using a web-based program, Reflex Math for the Summer Math Requirement. Reflex helps students of all ability levels to develop fluency with their basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. There are many excellent features provided by Reflex. It is adaptive to each student, accessible anywhere with an internet connection, engaging and results show that students make great gains when using Reflex. Students in 7th grade pre-algebra and 8th grade Algebra 1 are not required to complete Reflex Math summer component.
Math fact fluency is the quick and effortless (automatic) recall of basic math facts. When students achieve automaticity with these facts, they have attained a level of mastery that enables them to retrieve them from long-term memory without conscious effort or attention. Extensive research has demonstrated the critical role of fact fluency in mathematics and beyond and is underscored by studies that show it is a significant predictor of performance on standardized tests. Furthermore, the significance of fact retrieval speed as a predictor of performance is not limited to test items that directly assess computation — it predicts performance on math concept problems, word problems, data interpretation problems, and mathematical reasoning items as well.
Students can begin earning points towards their summer math total beginning May 28th. Each student who is expected to use Reflex is provided with access codes that have been generated by the school. These access codes are stapled to this letter that is being sent home with students. Each teacher has specific programs for their grade level. In Reflex, students work to earn a GREEN LIGHT. Green light status resets each day. Reflex Math recommends that students accomplish three green light days per week. Through the course of our 11-week summer, students should earn 33 green light days. Each green light day will earn the student 3 points. The total points possible for the summer math assignment is 99. If a student has 33 green light days, he/she will earn all 99 points. If a student earns 25 green light days, he/she will earn 75 of the 99 points. Students can typically get to the Green Light in 15 minutes of concentrated use. Students who are new to Reflex may take longer than that, but the time should decrease with continued use. For students who struggle to reach the Green Light in the allotted time, it is recommended they use Ninja to the Stars, Egyptian Conniption, and Swamp Chomper as games in which many facts can be solved very quickly. Reflex Math can be accessed through a web browser or through the app, Reflex Student.
Parents can keep track of their own child's progress in Reflex by signing up for a free parent account at www.reflexmath.com/parents. You will need to provide an email address, and then follow the steps to login and then get connected to your child. To complete the process and gain access to Reflex reports and status emails (for your child only), parents will need to know everything their student uses to login to Reflex – the child’s teacher’s username, class, and student’s password.
The reading assignments should be submitted to teachers no later than Monday, August 12, 2019. Teachers will use Reflex data from May 28 to August 11 to determine student scores. The assignments are considered part of the child’s grade for the first quarter of the 2019-2020 school year. Summer assignments may not be submitted late. Any student who fails to complete the entire summer reading assignment will receive a failing grade for the assignment. Any summer reading project submitted on or after August 12th will be considered a zero.
The office will be open each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm during the summer. Please don’t hesitate to contact us should you have questions or login/technical issues with Reflex Math.
Sincerely,
Natalie Johnson
