In the late 1800 and early 1900 this island was very major immigrant station in U.S. named after Manhattan merchant Samuel Ellis who owned it in 1770s. 1808 the state of New York sold the island to the federal goverment.The immigration center opened in 1892.
Miss Liberty
In 1947 Ellis islands center was closed. The Statue of Liberty became a part of miss Liberty. Then re-opened 1976. In the 1980's the government restored the island back into its natural beauty.
