Halloween!
Halloween! Below are our guidelines for costumes on Halloween. As a general rule, if you’re not sure if it is school appropriate it probably isn’t!
Halloween will be a lot of fun, but we do have kids as young as 4 & 5 in kindergarten and having our children feel safe at school is our highest priority, so please avoid anything that might scare our youngest learners!
Safe footwear (kids still have PE and recess!) is required.
No blood.
No weapons. Also, we know that things like sticks, pool noodles, and plungers make great pretend swords or guns at home, but please make sure your child doesn't bring these pretend weapons to school, either!
No costumes that are in conflict with our CARE behaviors or that make fun of others are allowed.
Halloween Parade: We do have an in-school Halloween Parade on Tuesday (10/31). This parade is designed to be an in-school event for the kids to see all the other kids in costume, but we have arranged for parents to be able to see the parade in the cafeteria (9:15 start time). If this is your only chance to see you child dressed up or if you have an in-class event right afterward by all means come and join us. If not, this might be an event to pass on. You will likely only see your child for a few seconds and parking will be very difficult as Plank North also has a parade.
Assembly: Being Humble and Kind
We shared Charles Dickens' definition of humble which is "do all the good you can and make as little fuss about it as possible". We talked about feeling proud, happy and excited when we are successful. We also talked about feeling sad, disappointed and angry when we aren't successful. All of those feelings are appropriate and expected. Then we tied in the Essential Skill of Self-Management. We all have choices in how we act when we are successful as well as when the outcome isn't what we would have hoped for and only the individual person can control his/her emotions and reactions (self-management).
We encourage you to talk to your children about times when they have had the opportunity to be humble as well as times when they have felt disappointed. When having these conversations, highlight appropriate responses to both the successes (being humble, not bragging, feeling proud) and the failures (not crying or pouting).
Here are links to several videos we showed during the assembly:

School 17 Coat Drive – November 1st – November 13th
For over 20 years Plank South families have generously donated gently used items for the winter season that we provide to Enrico Fermi School #17 in Rochester. School #17 is an inner city school with 90% of the students living at or below poverty level. Many of the students are homeless, living in shelters or temporary housing. Your donations ensure that they will be warm this winter!
If you have any questions please contact Spring Sanchez at spring.sanchez@gmail.com
Fall Book Fair - November 13th – November 16th
The Plank South Fall Book Fair begins on Monday, November 13th. The book fair will be open daily and students will attend based on a schedule by class room. It runs through Thursday, November 16th, ending with an evening book fair 6:30 - 7:30pm.

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLAR SEMIFINALISTS & COMMENDED STUDENTS
Your board of education congratulates two Webster Schroeder High School seniors, Daniel Ye and Selena Zhang, who have been honored as 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists. These academically talented were among 16,000 Semifinalists named by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Additionally, the board congratulates nine additional seniors that have been named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Although they will not continue in the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). Commended Students are:
