JBD FOCUS NEWSLETTER
June 2, 2017
Parents and Families of John B. Dey,
SOLs are coming to a close. We have finished with grade 3 and grade 5 wraps it up next week with Science and Social Studies. The children have been working incredibly hard as well as the teachers!
On June 9 at 1:00, we will have a Groundbreaking Ceremony. Dr. Aaron Spence, Mayor Will Sessoms, and School Board Chairman Beverly Anderson will all be ready with hard hats to 'break ground' for the new building. Even though it looks like the ground has been broken already, we look forward to this historical event for John B. Dey.
Next week's FOCUS will be the last one for the 2017-2018 school year. Please stay tuned for book recommendations for students and parents. One of the most powerful books I have read lately for parenting is called, The Collapse of Parenting, by Dr. Leonard Sax. If any of you are frustrated by constant struggles and negotiations with your children, this book is a must read. Parenting has changed dramatically over the years, creating some challenging issues with children. Where we would like them to have some independence, control, and choice, we are also faced with the dilemma of children calling all the shots and making decisions they are not capable of making at these young ages. I found it very enlightening.
Enjoy the weekend! Hopefully the weather will permit us to get outside and enjoy the sunshine.

CLINIC CORNER - IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL 5TH GRADERS
5th Graders!!! Are you ready for Middle School???
Parents, it’s not too early to think about Middle school.
This is a reminder for all 5th graders that the Tdap immunization is required to enter 6th grade. Call your Primary Care provider and schedule an appointment to get this done.
Proof of the immunization can be dropped off by your child to the clinic anytime up until Thursday, June 15, 2017. If you get it done after the last day of school or into the summer, please take it to your Middle School as soon as you get it; DON'T DELAY!.
Your child will not get a class schedule mailed to them in the summer without proof that they had this immunization. They will not be able to start school without this immunization.
Don’t Delay! Plan ahead and schedule the appointment. Bring proof to the school nurse before the last day of school and I will put the immunization information into your child’s health record for middle school.
