What a Week!!!
Middle School kids dove into the world of codes and ciphers this week. They did multiple activities decoding and creating their own secret messages. We are preparing for our escape room activities!!
In the Stock Market Game, we took a look at the Hershey company and learned that it actually failed twice before it became a big success. Part of its failure was the cost of equipment and we discussed that that is why some companies go public so that they can get money to upgrade their company and improve their production. Students also got to see how the release of new products, ex Apple, can really impact their stock value and of course news headlines as well. Most stocks dropped this week due to the announcement from the Treasury that we would not see a stimulus check before elections.
The Contactless Halloween Candy Dispensers are turning out great and the kids are being so creative!! We are finishing up building next week and decorating! Students are more than welcome to take these home and use them or donate them to any local organizations or individuals that would like to use them.
In The Game of Life!! this week we discussed credit cards and debit cards. We discussed the pros and cons of each, how to manage them, and how to get one. The kids also played a credit card simulation game so that they could see how interest can impact the price of objects and your payment. We also discussed credit scores, what they are, and what they mean.
We also learned a new Japanese game called Gomoku and did a creative activity with Creative Monsters.

What are We Working On!!!!
For their Asynchrous lessons, we are reading two different books. Elementary is reading The Gifted Kids Survival Guide and Middle School is reading Gifted Teen Survival Guide. Each book is walking them through what makes them unique and brings awareness to their different needs all while providing strategies. I am linking the two books below in case you would like to take a look at them. It is always very interesting to watch as they read certain parts because you know they have made a connection to something.
Stock Market -We will learn about diversity and how it can help our portfolio.
Elementary students will begin building their Contactless Halloween Candy Dispensers and middle school will finish. Please have students bring whatever supplies that they had planned on bringing. They can leave it in my room if they need to.
In the Game of Life students will start researching occupations and choose an occupation to play the game with. They will be given a salary based on what they choose and then will discuss state and federal taxes that will be taken out of their salaries as well as retirement and student loan payments.

Resources and Opportunities
I am also sharing the registration for GAMS online conference this year. GAM is Missouri's Gifted Association and they have a conference every year that is open to educators and parents. It does cost but they have a ton of great resources and sessions. Regular classroom teachers, I would suggest you going sometimes as well because it would provide strategies for you to use in the classroom and some background knowledge as to how gifted students tick!
The second link is to a free event through the GIfted Speaker Series. This talk will focus on ways to help gifted and twice-exceptional students develop executive functioning skills such as organization, self-advocacy, communication, and goal-setting. There will be a time for questions at the end.
Last, DESE is offering GIfted and Talented Tuesdays which is a free ZOOM each week for a wide variety of people and things, but there is a section for students and it is space-themed this quarter.
