The Weekly FIRE
Flexibility, Integrity, Respect, Effort
issue 7: 11/17/2020
Hello Dragons-
There are two things I want to remind you about this week. One is that the end of Hexter 2 will be here before you know it! The last day of Hexter 2 is December 14th. Make sure you are checking your StudentVUE and schoology and that you are staying on top of your assignments. Remember also that if you have incompletes from Hexters 5 or 6 from last year, you can earn credit for those classes by passing a class in the same subject area this year. In other words, you might be able to earn DOUBLE CREDIT for passing classes this term.
The second thing I want to remind you is that COVID cases are increasing across the state and in our community. Please, do you part to keep our community safe and healthy! Stay at home unless you have to go out. Don’t have social gatherings with people outside of your household. When you do have to go out, make sure you wear a mask and stay at least 6 feet from other people. We can do it!

Animal Guide of the Week:
-Laura Craford, RLA Social Worker
For those of you who do not know what the animal cards mean…
Each newsletter I will pull a card from my deck of animal guide cards, it is our message for the week—something we need to think about, understand or that we need to remember about ourselves or a situation. This is something that I have been doing with RLA students and staff for a while now, it’s my thing. 😊 If you ever want your own card, message me (Laura) through teams or @ (740) 240-2311 and I will send you a picture of one, just like when you would come to my office for one when we were in school!

Language Arts/ Wellness
Wellness and Language Arts classes are taking pride in our neighborhoods and community this hexter. Julie, Kristin, Maureen and Jo found common ground in their classes and offered students an opportunity to work together on a project. Did you know the neighborhood you grow up in can affect your future? The place where you live has a huge impact on how you live, travel, play, and on your identity as a person. We asked students to, "Share your neighborhood with us in this walking tour scavenger hunt." Students have the option to do a slide show, video or report with photos and visuals. We can't wait to see what students come up with!
I bet you never heard of Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin
-Sue Rosemarin, Science
Cecilia Payne discovered that stars are made largely of the two lightest chemical elements – hydrogen and helium. She made her discovery while in graduate school. At first nobody believed it – scientists were convinced that the sun’s composition was similar to the earth’s.
Within a few years Payne’s discovery became mainstream science – it was soon widely recognized that hydrogen is by far the commonest chemical element in stars and hence the universe.
Payne-Gaposchkin (her name after marriage) was the most distinguished female astronomer of her time, the first to be appointed full professor at Harvard University, and the first to chair a department.
Some Science Behind COVID-19
Some of you have probably heard that we entered a "two week pause" to stop the spread of COVID. I also know that information has not been widespread as to why doing things like this are so important scientifically as well as for public health. My goal is to provide you all with the why. WHY where a mask. WHY avoid large gatherings. WHY socially distance. For today I am addressing "Why are we doing a two week pause"
The plan is quite simple, bring down the number of daily infections. We in Oregon, like many parts of the country and the world, are experiencing record high COVID cases. If we don't do something, we will enter a model of exponential growth for the spread of COVID. Many of us may not be familiar with this term, so to help educate you, I have this rad video from It's Okay to be Smart. Take a look and see for yourself why exponential growth of COVID is no joke.

I Was Sleeping Where the Black Oaks Move
We watched from the house
as the river grew, helpless
and terrible in its unfamiliar body.
Wrestling everything into it,
the water wrapped around trees
until their life-hold was broken.
They went down, one by one,
and the river dragged off their covering.
Nests of the herons, roots washed to bones,
snags of soaked bark on the shoreline:
a whole forest pulled through the teeth
of the spillway. Trees surfacing
singly, where the river poured off
into arteries for fields below the reservation.
When at last it was over, the long removal,
they had all become the same dry wood.
We walked among them, the branches
whitening in the raw sun.
Above us drifted herons,
alone, hoarse-voiced, broken,
settling their beaks among the hollows.
Grandpa said, These are the ghosts of the tree people
moving among us, unable to take their rest.
Sometimes now, we dream our way back to the heron dance.
Their long wings are bending the air
into circles through which they fall.
They rise again in shifting wheels.
How long must we live in the broken figures
their necks make, narrowing the sky.

Benjamin Oliver Davis Jr.(December 18, 1912 – July 4, 2002) was an American United States Air Force general and commander of the World War II Airmen. He was the first African-American general officer in the United States Air Force. On December 9, 1998, he was advanced to four-star general by President Bill Clinton. During World War II, Davis was commander of the 99th Fighter Squadron and the 332nd Fighter Group, which escorted bombers on air combat missions over Europe. Davis flew sixty missions in P-39, Curtiss P-40, P-47 and P-51 Mustang fighters. Davis followed in his father's footsteps in breaking racial barriers, as Benjamin O. What’s better Netflix or Hulu? But really TikTok is where it’s at! Come to this group to discuss all things streaming and social media and everywhere in between. We hope to build a safe space where people can talk about their favorite shows, movies, and accounts they like to follow, and maybe watch a few videos! We might also get into ways to relax, deal with stress, and balance time management so you don’t end up binging on shows until 3am every night, just on the weekends ;)
