College Planning for Seniors & Parents: Online tonight!
H-F invites our seniors & their parents/guardians to a special online presentation on the college-application process, led by our Post-Secondary Counselors Kevin Coy & Brad Kain at 6:30 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, Aug. 31). Join them on Zoom to find out what to expect and what you should be doing now to prepare for life after H-F.
H-F Resiliency Project Info Meeting: Sept. 7
This project focuses on proactive intervention to identify and address students' at-risk indicators before they become severe problems, while also increasing their protective factors. In addition to covering the standard social and emotional learning indicators, the tool H-F will use also measures risk factors (depression, anxiety, victimization, ostracism) and protective factors (resiliency, grit, hope). Measuring both is critical — reducing even one risk indicator can improve academic performance 20%, and strengthening one protective factor can cut those risks by half.
H-F Football Home Opener & Salute to Service
Everyone is invited to H-F Football's Varsity home opener vs. Cahokia, set for this Saturday, Sept. 3, at 3 p.m. at H-F Stadium. The theme for this game is a Salute to Service; H-F will be selling special camo-themed hats with all proceeds going to the Honor Flight Network, an organization that is dedicated to transporting as many U.S. military veterans as possible to see the war memorials in Washington, D.C. Tickets ($5/adult, $2/student with ID) for home games this year will only be available online via Go Fan (click here to order). Please join us for this special afternoon!
Free Tutoring Begins Next Week
Starting right after the Labor Day holiday, free tutoring services will be available for all H-F students in the following subjects: Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Chinese, French, Spanish, Music and Writing. In-person tutoring will be offered before and after school, plus some sessions will be available online through Google Classroom. To view the complete schedule, please click here or check out the Events Calendar in your H-F FYI each week.
VTV Programming Begins Tomorrow
Are you ready for some VTV? Shows will begin airing tomorrow (Sept. 1) at www.VikingTelevision.com. New shows will be posted Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on regular school days. You can also tune into WHFH for music all day long, plus listen to talk shows after school. You can find it on your radio at 88.5 FM, or listen online via this link. This year's TV station manager is Aden Kozel; the WHFH radio station manager is Patrice St. Jean. Public relations will be handed by Lea Ryndak, and the business manager is Makayla Taylor. VTV is sponsored by Mr. Ciesielski, H-F Fine Arts teacher.
PSAT Sign Up for Juniors
Interested H-F juniors can now sign up for the Oct. 12 PSAT/NMSQT exam through our Assessment Department. This exam — also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test — provides an opportunity for high-scoring students to move on to the next round of the competition for national recognition. While not a mandatory exam, we strongly encourage all juniors to continue with their spring SAT preparation, using the online guide developed using Khan Academy (click here). Students will also continue to receive regular SAT prep in their regular coursework.
To sign up for the Oct. 12 PSAT:
- Log into your H-F Student Gmail account
- Follow this link...
- Complete the survey, then click "Submit."
Registration will end Saturday, Sept. 10. Questions? Please email cbucci@hf233.org.
Online Services Fair: Sept. 21
The Special Education Department invites you to the free online Midwest Transition Institute Services & Technology Fair, set for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21. The fair will feature services and technologies important for adult life. Exhibitors will be grouped into 30-min. time slots representing related topics, including sensory supports, transition & vocational services and deaf-blindness agencies. The schedule of vendors will be sent to registered participants next week.
Above: Members of this year's H-F Speech Team — including Tinbit Dogisso, Devin Kenebrew, Aaron McIntyre, Ariel Miller, Ben Peden, Jazmin Rhodes, Emma Steiner, Amy Ward, Morgan Yancey & Stella Hoyt (pictured above) — spent their Monday introducing fellow students to the different events in competitive speech at this year's Speech Showcase, held in the Mall Auditorium. Auditions for this year's Speech Team are set for Wednesday & Thursday next week.
Below: Principal Dr. Alexander and D233 Board Member Steve Anderson had a great time meeting future Vikings on Saturday at Homewood SD153's back-to-school event at James Hart School. They saw some current H-F students, staff and alumni, as well!
Correction: In the Aug. 17 H-F FYI Viking Victories we regret that a student's name was misspelled. Congratulations to senior Titilayo Anoma, who was inducted into the H-F Thespian Honor Society in late June.
