What are plums?

There are over 2,000 varieties of plums around the world, and over a hundred of them are available in the United States! These fruits come in many different sizes, shapes and colors. They range from round, to oval to heart-shaped in its shape. The skins of plums come in red, purple, blue-black, red, green, yellow and amber, and the flesh can come in yellow, green/pink or orange. But the taste of all of these varieties are all vertually the same- sweet and juicy.

What nutrients are in this fruit?

Plums have nutrients called neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acid that help as antioxidants, also the vitimine C in this fruit helps your body to absorb iron. Vitamin C is needed in the body to make healthy tissue and is also needed for a strong immune system. This fruit is also a good source of vitimine A, K, potasium, and dietary fiber.

How can I eat a plum?

Plums are very good eaten as is- if its been in the refrigerator let it get to room temperature to get it at its best sweetness and juicyness. Plums can also be used in recipes, and are usually baked or poached.

Recipe suggestions?

Make pizza with a twist by broiling sliced plums, goat cheese, walnuts and sage on top of a whole wheat pita bread or pizza crust.

Poach plums in a red wine and serve with lemon zest for a great dessert.

Bake pitted plum halves in a 200°F oven until they are wrinkled. Then mix them into a rye bread recipe for sweet and hardy bread.
