Mr. Kotek's Mentor Family
Over the course of our last few mentor meetings, Mr. Kotek’s mentor family has been working really hard to design a project that would be useful for Conscious Discipline. After a lot of brainstorming and planning, students finished the first version of their “Commitment Selector”. The purpose of this invention is to help mentor families easily select what their daily commitments will be for the day.
Our mentor family’s project uses LEGO WeDo 2.0 and coding to power a motor that spins an arrow based on the lines of code students have written. The arrow then selects a commitment for the day. These commitments are on wedges that are affixed to the spinner’s casing using Velcro. Students liked this idea because it allowed commitments to be alternated with new commitment wedges that might be created later down the line.
Using the design process, students planned their design together, listed potential materials they would use to construct the prototype, and sketched the design out together. From there, they broke into teams that would tackle specific tasks to help the prototype come together--casing designers, LEGO constructors, commitment writers, and coders. Each had their part and brought what they designed back to the large group to build the design seen here.
Students then tested their design and have started discussions about what they could do as a team to make the next version of their “Commitment Selector” better and more functional for users, like a power button, signage that tells what the invention is, and a holder for additional commitment wedges.
A link to a video that demonstrates how the “Commitment Selector” works can be found here.
