South Grove Intermediate School
News and Notes for September
From Mrs. Reid
Ready. Responsible. Respectful.
These are all words your children hear everyday at South Grove. I am extremely impressed with how quickly students have adjusted to school and our expectations. Every day I walk through the halls and am impressed with the learning taking place. Our South Grove students have done a fantastic job of getting in the learning groove.
Please make sure to sign your student's agenda book each evening and review the data binder that is sent home every Monday. These two tools are used to help keep you informed of your child's progress and to provide an easy way to communicate with your child's teacher. The staff at South Grove is dedicated to seeing each child succeed. We all look forward to helping your student grow this 2013-2014 school year!

From Mrs. Stacy Johnson
Read! Read! Read! This is the mantra of all teachers! Here are some tips from the Indiana Department of Education. Please help support your child's literacy goals by doing the following things:
- Read with someone
- Read to someone
- Share with someone what he/she has read
- Listen to someone read
- Help others read
- Read independently
Please take a moment to check out the link to the Indiana Department of Education's reading initiative.
Penny Wars to support CF Research
This means WAR! During the week of September 9th the students at South Grove will participate in a Penny War to help support CF. Students need to bring in their loose change to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The class who raises the most money will win a class party. Parents may also send in a check payable to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to support this effort.
Ms. Beth Walker, a sixth grade teacher at our school, is very active with the CF Foundation and Mr. Ethan Harris will also help with this philanthropic fundraiser. The Penny War is a great way for the students at South Grove to learn about this disease and build class spirit.
Pictured is Mrs. Marchuk's class - the winner of the 2012 Penny War. Can her class win again?!?

Girls on the Run
This year South Grove will sponsor a fall session of Girls on the Run. Girls on the Run is a national organization with a twelve week program designed to help boost self esteem and confidence while training to run a 5K (3.1 mile) run. Mrs. Collinsworth, Mrs. Bair, and Mrs. Keeley started this group last year and have a group of five additional teachers who help support the training program. Girls will be able to sign up the week of September 9th.
Save the date - Christmas Program
The 5th grade Christmas Program will be held on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 2pm and 7pm in the South Grove gym. All fifth graders will be performing.

What's happening this month?
September 3rd - Progress Reports
Paper copies of Progress Reports are only sent home to students with a D or F in a subject area. You should have received an access code to the Parent Connect website. Parent Connect gives you access at any time to your child's grades and missing assignments. Do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher via email if you have questions about your child's grades. Many teachers have taken the time to show students how to log in to Parent Connect so they can also monitor their own academic progress. Students have a separate log in to this portal.
September 10 - Buzz Club Begins
Buzz Club is an after school program offered to students at South Grove. This program meets Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Teachers work to support reading and math initiatives. Please contact Mr. Brent Booher if you are interested in having your child participate. (bbooher@bgcs.k12.in.us)
