The Pawsome Print
October 23, 2020
Dear Pawsome Loring Families,
Thank you to everyone that provided feedback during the recent family survey. Your feedback is important as we continue to adjust and modify the plans we created prior to students returning. It was great to hear about all the really pawsome things that are happening for students. I know how hard teachers are working and it was wonderful to hear that families recognize and appreciate what our teachers are doing this year. This is tough work and our teachers are doing everything they can and more to teach our students as well as support our families.
Each student and family presents different needs and we are working to support each of these needs. Regardless if your child is learning in our hybrid or remote model, school is happening all five days of the week. It is expected that children are up and ready for school starting at 7:55 a.m. It is also expected that students are participating in synchronous meeting times and completing as well as turning in assigned work. We know that our current model puts more responsibility on the adults at home and everyone at Loring appreciates that work and commitment. The continued collaboration between home and school has always been important and this year it is essential as we exist in our current school model.
Whether your child is In school or learning from home it is important you Call the Absentee Line (978-579-0870 Option 1) to let us know if they will not be in. An email to your child's teacher is nice but this information does not always make it to the front office so please give us a call.

Masks
On The Bus
A reminder that all students must wear a mask on the school bus. If you arrive at the bus stop and realize that your child forgot their mask, please request a disposable one from the bus driver. Every bus has disposable masks available if you forget. We can't have any student board the bus without a mask.In The Backpack
Please make sure that your child has a few extra masks in their backpack every day. This is helpful as masks can get dirty, wet, or unusable during the day. We do have extras if your child needs one. Please tell them to ask an adult if they need a new mask during the day and they don't have an extra in their backpack.
Teacher Conferences
With conferences starting to happen, we wanted to make sure you knew that if you do not have a Google account of your own, you can use their child's login to join the Google Meet, or join by phone. Please reach out to your teacher with any questions.
Notes from the Nurse
In order to provide some guidance for families regarding testing for COVID-19 related symptoms, we would like to share some information with you.
If your child has any symptom from Group A or two or more symptoms from Group B consult with your pediatrician for testing referral.
We have heard from parents that many of the urgent care sites are promoting the antigen test because of the rapid result. Since many people are not familiar with the difference in testing types, we wanted to share this explanation with you as we will only accept negative results from a PCR test for return to school after students exhibit any illness symptoms.
There are multiple tests available, however a molecular diagnostic test (PCR) detects the presence of the virus and is the gold standard for detecting active infection. PCR test results are coming back within 24-48 hours in most cases.
A second method is the antigen test. Although these antigen tests are faster to run, they are less sensitive and less specific and results must be confirmed by a molecular test. Antigen testing has a false negative rate of close to 50%.
Please note that we will need a copy of the PCR results before your child can return to school. Please contact your school nurse with any questions.
Thank you,
SPS Nursing Team
