The GEC Insider
Fall 2023 Update for GEC Families
Greetings Genesee Early College Families,
As we bid farewell to the first marking period, we reflect on the bustling fall season that has unfolded here at Genesee Early College. We've been privileged to witness our students diving headfirst into various activities both at GEC and the University of Michigan - Flint, and we couldn't be more thrilled about their enthusiasm and engagement. With Friday, October 27th, marking the end of this period, we're excited to share the latest updates and highlights with you. It's been a pleasure getting to know your children, and we're equally eager to connect with you during the upcoming Parent/Teacher conferences on Thursday, November 2nd.
In this edition of The GEC Insider, we're excited to share a recap of the exciting events and activities that have unfolded throughout this fall season. You'll also find a handy calendar with important dates to mark on your calendar, as well as easy-to-follow instructions for scheduling your parent/teacher conferences. Plus, we're delighted to introduce you to our newest staff member, Shanae Dawson, who is ready to make a positive impact on our GEC community.
We firmly believe that the partnership between the school and our parents is essential for our students' success, and we encourage you to be an active participant in your child's educational journey. So, whether you're a seasoned high school parent or new to the experience, we invite you to join us, collaborate, and get involved in your GEC community. Many opportunities exist to get involved including attending parent/teacher conferences, joining our Parents Partnering for Success group, or volunteering to supervise clubs and events. Your partnership with us is invaluable, and together, we will continue to nurture the growth, development, and success of our high school students.

GEC Students Explore Michigan Universities
Each year, Genesee Early College organizes a trip for its students to visit various colleges and universities in Michigan, enabling them to experience different campus environments and discover educational opportunities. On October 17th, a group of students went to Michigan State University while another group went to Wayne State University. During these visits, students had the chance to gain insights into university life through interactions with current students. They strolled through the campuses, received a firsthand look at dorm living in a residence hall, and indulged in a delicious meal at a campus dining hall. Upon returning to their own campus, the students took time to reflect on their experiences and made updates to their college and career plans based on what they had learned.
Introducing Ms. Shanae Dawson
Genesee Early College is excited to welcome Shanae Dawson to our staff. Ms. Dawson will be serving as the social worker for both Genesee Early College and Mott Middle College. Her BA is from UM-Flint and Masters degree is from MSU. She has worked in different departments across the UM-Flint campus for 9 years. After leaving UM-Flint she went on to do intensive outpatient and Homebased therapy. In her spare time she loves to travel, shop, try new restaurants or lounge around the house.
Ms. Dawson stated, "I am very excited to have finally joined the team and looking forward to getting to know everyone!" She is here to provide support to our GEC students and families. So if your student or your family is need or resources or support, please send her an email at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the GEC main office to get connected with her.
