Arthropods dissection

Phillip Goldman

Objectives

Name and describe all of the organs in the Arthropods body.

Background Information

Arthropods also know as Arthropada is a very broad phylum. Since it is such a broad phylum I will narrow it down to grasshoppers. Grasshopper are herbivores so they do not prey on anything. However Birds, lizards, mantids, spiders, and rodents. Grass hopper live in grassy areas such as savannas or plains. Grasshoppers are herbivores so they help with fertilization. They have strong hind legs that help them jump from place to place.

Arthropods Respiratory System (grasshoppers)

Holes in the grasshoppers belly called spiricals draw in oxygen. From the spiricals the oxygen goes to the trachea in the body. The blood in the grasshopper flows over the organs meaning that there are no veins or circulatory system. Tracheal system works to store carbon dioxide and distribute oxygen.

Functions of the Respiratory System.

spiricals- holes in the abdomen that draw in oxygen as well as expel oxygen

trachea-cleans the air for use.

Interesting Facts

1- a grasshoppers ear drum is on its abdomen

2- Grasshoppers make noise by rubbing their hind leg against their wing.

3- Grasshoppers actually jump by being catapulted into the air by a small cuticle in their knee.

4- The 10'000 different species of grasshoppers all have their own unique rhythm.
