WRAPPING IT UP

Ending Your Essay on a Good Note

Importance of Your Conclusion Paragraph

Imagine for a second that you're watching a great action movie. You and all of your friends are on the edge of the seat as the final battle between the hero and villain is about to take place. The power goes out in the theater and you are unable to finish the movie. Even though you've spent the last hour and a half on the edge of your seat, you would likely describe the overall experience as a negative one. Just as the introduction to your essay is important and should grab the reader's attention, the conclusion paragraph is vital as it provides a sense of closure to your writing.

Restate Your Thesis/Main Points

The whole purpose of this paragraph is finalize your paper. You should start this paragraph with the way you ended your introduction, restating your thesis and the main points from each of your body paragraphs. This should not be a "copy and paste" job as rephrasing your thesis will sound much better (Who wants to read the exact same sentence multiple times? Who wants to read the exact same sentence multiple times?).

Finalize the Essay

Remember that hook that you wrote in the Introductory Paragraph? Find a way to bring that in to the last sentence or two or your essay. Once again, don't just type the exact same thing. If you asked a question for your hook, answer it. If you started to tell a story with your hook, finish it. Give the reader a sense of closure.

Ten Commandments of Conclusion Paragraphs

1) Thou shalt restate thy thesis and thine main points.

2) Thou shalt not repeat anything word for word from anywhere else in your paper.

3) Thou shalt not repeat anything word for word from anywhere else in your paper. See what I did there?

4) Thou shalt not provide any new information. The conclusion is a place to recap. It's not a place to throw all the extra stuff that you didn't know where to put.

5) Thou shalt provide the reader with a sense of closure.

6) Thou shalt not be conceited and refer to thyself in the conclusion (unless it is finishing up a personal story from your hook).

7) Thou shalt not even consider putting something like "The End" as your conclusion.

8) Thou shalt not put anything such as "this concludes my essay" (we know it's a conclusion, it's the last paragraph).

9) Thou shalt not make the conclusion paragraph the longest paragraph in your paper. The Conclusion and the Introduction should be the shortest two paragraphs in your essay.

10) Thou shalt not repeat anything word for word from anywhere else in your paper. Sorry I couldn't help myself, but I hope you get the picture now.
