Nineteen of our school-level Teachers of the Year are attending a week of professional development through the NC Center for the Advancement of Teaching on Ocracoke Island! Encouraging Acceptance and Equity
Shout Out! to Springfield MS for encouraging acceptance and equity among students of different races and backgrounds! Last week, the entire school watched the movie Remember the Titans and discussed past and present racial issues. The students were also asked to sit with different people at lunch to foster friendships across ethnic barriers. Kudos to Springfield Principal Marquis Spell for leading the initiative and to The Wilson Times for covering it on the front page of yesterday's paper (photo by The Wilson Times)!

Ms. Lewis Tutors
"We are so thankful for the support of WCS Executive Director of Elementary Education Jennifer Lewis. She volunteered to tutor one of our fourth-grade math groups. She was so excited to work with our students and had notes all over her math book!" - From Instructional Coach Monika Sharma at Hearne ES

Adopting our BTs
Shout Out! to these groups for adopting our Beginning Teachers (BTs) and showing them LOVE in February – The Wilson Education Partnership adopted the BT1s (in their first year with WCS); Jo Brinson, a retired WCS Teacher and the mother of BT1 Lauren Brinson, adopted the BT2s; The Wilson Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators adopted the BT3s; and WCS Teacher of the Year Leigh Anne Orr sent all of the BTs a letter of encouragement!
Historic Project
Eighth-graders in Bradley Whitley's Social Studies class at Elm City MS, created projects on the Underground Railroad. One student, Siani, created a family tree project which included personal family stories from her relatives. She conducted her own genealogical research and uncovered family connections to the Underground Railroad. Two other students, Mesha and Kendra, created an authentic replica "code" quilt, which would have been used by Underground Railroad conductors to signal the way North to freedom. February is Black History Month.
