CONGRATULATIONS SIGSBEE!
Department of Defense Education Act (DoDEA) Award Recipient
Sigsbee Charter School was awarded a $500,00 grant by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). The goal outlined in the proposal for this grant included improving the self-efficacy of 3-8 students in STEM through a Problem-Based curriculum.
Our school proudly serves approximately 50% of military-dependent students from all five branches of the Armed Forces and has established partnerships with eight local military installations and environmental agencies. This grant aims to address challenges, including diminished participation in STEM courses in the last two years, issues with the sustainability and transferability of curriculum, and a decline in military-connected students’ mental wellness since the Covid-19 Pandemic.
To increase self-efficacy in STEM, educators at Sigsbee Charter School will create a PBL curriculum that is transferable and sustainable, as well as implement PBL tasks that deepen community and military partnerships with the school. Partnership organizations include Reef Relief, MOTE Marine, the College of the Florida Keys, and the local military installations.
Over the next five years, the DoDEA will closely monitor the planning and implementation of this grant as Sigsbee Charter School strives to increase students’ self-efficacy in STEM and create a sustainable STEM curriculum centered around Problem-Based Learning.
Congratulations to our grant team writers: Dr. Fox (STEM Coach), Principal Jannes (Project Director), and Mrs. Bartley (Finance Director).
MONDAY'S COSTUME PARADE
VIEWERS
Please stay off walkways and outside of rooms and hallways. No parents may be outside the G wing area since this is where we will be filming. Our paraders and crew will need these spaces.
Go to your child's classroom after the parade if you are taking them home when it is over. The homeroom teacher will have a sign-out sheet. Please DO NOT take your child without making contact with the teacher.
Enjoy the excitement!
PLEASE NO
Staff members shudder when they see Halloween falls on a Monday. This means excited (and sometimes overstimulated) children who will become exhausted (sugar-induced) learners later in the week, sometimes experiencing an emotional overload affectionately known as "the crash." We want everyone to have fun and enjoy the festivities, BUT please help us keep the season's candy treats at home.
As you may imagine, it becomes increasingly difficult to teach students when they are already exhausted and "sugared." Students are not permitted to share food items either. The week will flow much more smoothly if we all agree to eliminate the candy in the classroom.
If you need to remove excess treats from your home, you can donate your unused candy to the office and we will use it during the Veteran's Day Parade.
COSTUME GUIDELINES
COSTUME EVENTS DRESS CODES
Costumes are not allowed to have any dangerous objects (i.e., toy swords, toy guns, chains, skates, or spray cans). Please leave all accessories at home.
Students should be able to manipulate their costumes to use the restroom independently.
Young children should be in costume when they arrive at school and be able to sit and learn without distraction.
Costumes should not be frightening. No blood or gore. No masks or costumes that cover the head (head coverings may be worn during the parade only)
Costumes should be opaque.
Shoes must be safe (no slippers or high heels)
Face masks, hoods, or anything that covers the entire face cannot be worn.
If a child does not meet the guidelines, they will be asked to remove the costume.
Students may have to select a different costume for the school parade than they choose to wear that evening. Students are not required to participate.
If you are attending the parade and taking your child with you after it is over, sign them out with the classroom teacher.
PARENT COFFEE CLATCH
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2
8:15-9:15 AM (Media Center)
Join us in the library/media center for our first Parent Coffee Clatch of the year. These meetings are designed for parents/guardians to learn about relevant school topics and issues so that we can work as a team to ensure your child's success and happiness.
This month's topic, "We've Made It This Far, Now What," focuses on lessons learned from the first quarter and strategies you can use at home to help your child navigate their learning. Principal Jannes will present with Mrs. Hankins, one of our literacy coaches. Bring a mug and your questions.
*Young children are welcome to join and stay in the room with their parents.
Parents will receive a volunteer hour for attending.Picture Retake Policy
PERRY HODIES PHOTOGRAPHY RETAKE POLICY: (as of 08/2022)
When we make a mistake or it is the photographer's error ( i.e. out of focus, eyes closed), we happily re-photograph at our expense. Parents need to send in their initial package! However, parents will have to pay for another package, if parents want their student's photograph retaken because:
* they wish they had worn different clothes
* they forgot it was picture day
* their student needed a haircut or didn't comb their hair right
* they wanted the student to smile a certain way, and they didn't
* braces are off now, and they want a new photograph
* they want to give the student another chance
Anybody new to Sigsbee or absent on picture day will also get their picture taken for our yearbook.
