Memorial News
April 2019
From Mr. Collier
Dear Parents/Guardians:
I hope that this month's newsletter finds everyone doing well and staying healthy. Our students are excited about the spring season and are enjoying their recess time outdoors. I'm hoping that we don't go from winter directly to summer. There are many events happening at Memorial School before the spring break in the last week of April.
During the April break, the front entrance of Memorial School will go through a transformation. We will be changing the front doors and adding a security vestibule to prevent anyone unannounced access into the school building. Also during this week, the PTO has purchased additional air conditioning units to be installed in the first and second grade classrooms. However, the electrical work to power up these units will take place over the summer.
On Wednesday, April 3rd, the Memorial staff and I will meet our new kindergarten parents and introduce them to Memorial School. Our parent orientation will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. This is not a night to bring any children as we will be discussing some sensitive material.
The spring season has begun and that means our students might be spending some late nights out on the sports fields. As parents, please assist and guide your child to help them balance their academic and sports commitments. As always, the Memorial staff and I are always available if you need any support in this matter.
Enjoy the spring season!
Safety First on Memorial Drive
There have been numerous concerns about the parking and the way people are driving on Memorial Drive. Drivers are creating dangerous conditions for children and pedestrians. There are reports of speeding, disregarding the crossing guards, parents walking with their children in between or behind cars, and misuse of the drop- off lane. Please let this be a warning to everyone that the Montvale Police Department is aware of the situation and will be issuing tickets when they witness this happening.
From Mrs. Dugan: School Nurse
It seems that just overnight, spring has finally sprung with high pollen counts already the last few days in our area. If your child is a spring allergy sufferer and requires medication for allergy symptoms, please make every effort to administer medication in the morning before school to optimize your child’s relief from symptoms during school hours.
Please remember that children are not permitted to transport medication to and from school, and the school nurse is not permitted to administer ANY medications, even over the counter, without written permission from the child’s doctor and parent. I do also recommend that children with spring allergies carry a bottle of water to keep in their classroom, as this may help ease some symptoms.
If your child has asthma triggered by spring allergens, please be sure that all medication and paperwork is updated and in my office. Again, children may not carry medications of any kind.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time with questions or concerns. Your child’s health and well being is my priority and I look forward to a fun filled and exciting spring season at Memorial School.
The Rockland Boulders has partnered with Active International and Scholastic Book Fairs to promote literacy in New York and Northern New Jersey schools. This year, Memorial Elementary School will take part in their fun competition to encourage our students to read more at home. Mrs. Maureen McLaughlin, Ms. Marlene Wynkoop, and Ms. Megan Bailek have volunteered to collect, record, and submit all information for this competition. All students received the information about the reading competition. You can read more about it at
Family Night
Memorial School’s Family Night will be on Wednesday, April 17th. We will not assign any homework or assessments for the next day. Mrs. Fasano will disseminate the family activity the day before, and we hope that you will share some photos of your family participating in these activities.
Keep sending us your family photos!
New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA)
The New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (formerly known as PARCC), will be administered to all students in Grades 3 and 4 beginning Tuesday, April 30th. The computer-based assessments are used to measure the knowledge, concepts, and skills identified for each grade level as per the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics.
