Curriculum News
Happy Holidays! I hope that your family enjoys the holidays together and creates many fun and exciting memories, but also finds time to rest up and relax over the break. Your child has worked so hard these first two quarters of school and has shown so much growth in his/her own individual way.
The second nine weeks will end on December 16th and classroom teachers have been hard at work on completing standards-based checklists for each student that will go home after the holiday break in their blue folder. The third nine weeks will begin when we return to school on January 5th and will end on March 17th.
We will begin the Alabama Literacy Act’s middle of the year benchmark testing to measure growth from the first two quarters through the Renaissance Star Assessments (see below for the breakdown of each grade level’s assessments). Depending on the grade level, students will take Star Early Literature, Star Reading, or Star Math online using an iPad. For Star CBM testing, students will be pulled in a 1:1 setting with a certified teacher to complete those required assessments.
Grade Level Star Assessments Given
Kindergarten:
Star Early Literature
Star CBM: letter naming, letter sounds, phoneme segmentation, and receptive nonsense words
First Grade:
Star Reading
Star Math
Star CBM: phoneme segmentation, expressive nonsense words, and oral reading fluency
Second Grade:
Star Reading
Star Math
Star CBM: expressive nonsense words and oral reading fluency
If you would like to know more about the Star assessments, please email at padorman@auburnschools.org and I will be glad to answer any questions. I hope you all have a beautiful holiday!
Always Choose Kindness,
Dr. Dorman

Music and Art News
This month in Music, preparations for our holiday program are in full swing. Kindergarten, first, and second grade students are working hard on our holiday show, “’Twas the Night.” We can’t wait for you to see what we have learned! In class, we are discussing many different winter holidays, including Christmas, Hannukah, Las Posadas, and Kwanzaa. We are also having a great time exploring the story of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet and discovering different genres of music – including classical, jazz, hip-hop, and a cappella – as we experience different variations of the songs from The Nutcracker!
