Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
November 12th-16th
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Social Studies: This week we will continue our unit on Explorers. Students should have an almost completed study guide (It's yellow) in their IANS. We've been filling it out daily in class with each explorer. We've covered Leif Eriksson and Christopher Columbus. Tomorrow we will cover Ferdinand Magellan and our test over those three will be Thursday 15th. After that we will start the next 4 explorers.
- Mrs. Thurston's and Ms. Uhlenhake's Math/ELA: We are going to be reviewing all previously taught skills before Thanksgiving in ELA. After Thanksgiving we will start our new unit: Boxes and Bullets! We will focus on comparing and contrasting texts this week while reading a few mentor texts. In writing, we will finish our Realistic Fiction stories. Spelling will be postponed until after Thanksgiving! After Thanksgiving we will be talking about our Expert Exhibit coming up. This week in math we will review 4 digit by 1 digit and 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication. Multi-digit Multiplication test will be Friday, November 16th. Timed tests are given weekly as practice. Students are encouraged to study their facts nightly for at least 10 minutes. They can use flash cards, reflex, ixl, or multiplication.com.
- Ms. Harris' Math/ELA: Spelling tests are this week. Students should have 5 homework assignments completed on their testing day. We are starting our new Junior Great Books Unit "Resourcefulness" this week. Students will read and discuss a Ukranian folktale, "Shrewd Todie and Lyzer the Miser." They will take an open book test on this story on Thursday 15th. In math we will use our knowledge of multi-digit multiplication to create a newspaper in class containing math articles, advertisements, and comic strips. This will be done in class and will not be homework. On Friday 16th students will take their final multiplication post test. In writing we will start organizing our Expert Exhibit research using an outline. A completed outline will be due Monday 19th and will count for 15% of their final grade.. Students will use the outline to help them pick which information from their research that they'll use in their final paper. This will be done in class and is not homework.

Angel Tree
FMES will host an Angel Tree this year, giving gifts to our school families unable to provide them this holiday season. If you are interested in contributing to our Angel Tree, mittens will be available for pick up in the main office from Mr. Finch. If you prefer that your child to bring a mitten home with the requested gift, it is necessary to provide a written note to their teacher, or to Mr. Finch via email at finchj@fortmillschools.org as we are unable to release them without parent consent. We are so lucky to have such an incredibly supportive FMES family and are truly grateful for your continued support to make the 2018 Angel Tree a success. All gift items are due back to FMES no later than December 12th. Thank you so much!
