Overview Of Texas After The Oil Boom
For the economic changes, Texas got richer because of oil booms. Texas economically had changed in many ways. Some of these things are: new upper class, boom and bust, new entrepreneurs, more cities, population increase, supply and demand and jobs. One of the major reasons fro this was the new upper class. The new upper class was mainly spindletop workers and because of this spindletop workers ruled the upper class. The other major reason was the population increase. Because of this Texas got more popularity and people wanted to come to Texas. Economics is only one of the reasons why Texas changed after the oil boom.
Along with the economic changes there were social changes. These changes were like: Texans were no longer considered "rednecks," college opportunity, divorce rate rising, job opportunity and Friday night football. One of the major things was divorce rate. Men were leaving their lives because they made so much money on oil that they think they can marry a girl that only wanted them for their money. And get this- Texas divorce rate was higher than that of the entire United States. The other big reason was the college opportunity. Colleges like UT and A&M were just starting and people wanted to go there because of the oil that could possibly be underneath the campuses. Believe it or not but social changes were a big part of Texas changing at the time.
The last major reason is political changes. Some changes were: progressive party, railroad commission and new laws. One of the major reason was railroad commission. Governor Hogg enforced railroad commission. This was a great idea because it connected Texas to the rest of the United States. The other major reason is new laws. This Texas more formal than past and kept Texans tame and not so "loose cannon" behavior. This made Texas a better state all around, and in our opinion the best reason was the political changes.
Texas became a better state because of oil, for God's sake they named a football team after the oil discovery. We truly believe without the discovery of oil, Texas or the United States would not have been the same.
