This Week in Kindergarten...
Our World Tour continued through South America and into Africa this week. While in Peru, we took a boat ride down the Amazon river and saw some rainforest animals, and we climbed up to Machu Picchu, seeing llamas roaming around the ancient ruins. Back at the "hotel," we read books and wrote about both of these colorful countries, labeled the rain forest layers, drew llamas and painted beautiful tapestries. Next, we traveled to Kenya and found out about the amazing animals and people that live there. We painted brightly colored Maasai necklaces and read a story about a girl from a Kenyan village who brought a gift of fruits to her friend. After reading and retelling the story, we tasted each of the fruits and made a graph of our favorites/ Finally, we learned how to play a strategy game called Shisima that is similar to tic-tac-toe.
During math this week, we continued decomposing numbers to ten into various number sentences (ex. 5=1+4, 5=2+3, 5=5+0, etc) using both cubes and then on "Sum Flowers." We also looked at weight by comparing items in the classroom and sorting them into "heavier" and "lighter" categories. The students really enjoyed trying out different types of scales to make their comparisons.
Our How-To Books writing unit is coming to an end and we will be sharing our favorite instructional book with friends next week. The kindergartners have become experts in writing three-step stories with transition words and pictures that teach. In our next unit, we will learn how to write opinion pieces.
