Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday!

Martin Luther King Day is observed every year on the third Monday of January — on January 16 this year. King was an influential civil rights leader — best known for his work on racial equality and ending racial segregation in the United States. His life and achievements are remembered and celebrated on this day.

Each year on the third Monday of January we observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and reflect on the work that still needs to be done for racial equality. This January 17, make the holiday more than just a day off and take time to reflect and take action on civil rights issues across the globe.

Great Kindness Week Challenge 2023!

The California Department of Education, in partnership with the Great Kindness Challenge® (GKC), encourages all teachers, staff, students, and families of California schools to participate in the GKC the week of January 23–27, 2023.The GKC initiative, presented by Kids for Peace, is a global campaign that promotes kindness in kindergarten through grade twelve schools. It is a positive, action-based bullying-prevention initiative that creates a school culture of kindness, compassion, unity, and respect. It is critical that school staff and students feel safe at schools. Now more than ever, we all need to put safety and SEL supports at the forefront of our schools. We invite you to join nearly 17 million students who participated in over 33,000 schools in 115 countries for a positive start to 2023!

English Language Proficiency Assessments - February 1

The Summative English Language Proficiency Assessments for California, or “Summative ELPAC,” is the test used to measure how well students understand English when it is not the language they speak at home. This years testing window is open from February 1, to May 31st 2023. Information from the ELPAC tells your child’s teacher about the areas in which your child needs extra support.

This spring, your child may take the Summative ELPAC.

Students in kindergarten through grade twelve who are classified as English learners will take the Summative ELPAC every year until they are reclassified as proficient in English. Students are tested on their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Your child’s voice is being recorded as part of the Speaking test.

You are an important part of your child’s education. To help your child get ready for the test, you can:

· Read to your child, or have them read to you on a regular basis.

· Use pictures and ask your child to tell you what they see, or what is happening in each picture.

· Provide your child with opportunities to use language outside of school.

· Talk with your child’s teacher about your child’s listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to help support their progress.

To learn more about the ELPAC, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.

You also can look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the ELPAC Starting Smarter website at https://elpac.startingsmarter.org/ .

If you have any questions about your child taking the ELPAC, please contact Mrs. Tellez-Soto, EL Support Teacher at 805.488.2217 ext. 1887 or via email at: rtellez@hueneme.org

Start the day off right!

Hathaway community, please ensure that our students arrive to campus no later than 8:00 am. Arriving on time allows students time to walk to their line and be ready to be picked up by their teacher. Students should be in their seats by 8:05 am. Students arriving after 8:05 are marked tardy.

Universal Meals

Great news! starting this year throughout California, as a result of Education Code (EC) 49501.5, all students in grades TK–12 will be provided two meals free of charge (breakfast and lunch) during every school day regardless of their free or reduced-price meal eligibility!

Good food and nutrition are an essential part of great learning!
