Chula Vista High School - Home of Champions!
Week 23 January 30th - February 5th
Message from the Principal
Good morning Spartans,
I hope you all had a great weekend. It's hard to believe that it's almost February! The spring semester is typically known as one that goes by really fast, and before you know it, It will be spring break. Things that make this semester seem like it's moving along faster are state CAASPP testing, ELPAC testing, AP testing, and all the preparations for our end-of-year senior activities such as Grad Night, Prom and Graduation.
So with testing season just around the corner, here is a glimpse of what's coming up:
CAASPP
Each spring, eleventh grade students take the CAASPP in English and Math. They also take the CAST in Science. Any twelfth grade student who did not take the Science CAST in eleventh grade, must take it as a senior. These assessments provide important information as to whether students are on track to pursue college and career by the time they graduate from high school. It provides an opportunity to measure the skills of all students against the academic standards. The results will not be used for any evaluative grade purposes. Instead, this information helps plan out curriculum supports, instruction, and resources to support students.
ELPAC
The ELPAC is taken every spring by students who are identified as English Learners. The ELPAC measures the level of proficiency in English in the four domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will take the assessment each spring until the reach level 4, and it is one of the measures used to reclassify a student from Short Term English Learner (STEL) or a Long Term English Learner (LTEL) to a Reclassified Fluent English Proficient (RFEP) student.
AP Exams
Students taking our most rigorous courses, Advanced Placement (AP) courses have the opportunity to take AP exams administered through The College Board. A score of 3 and above on a 1 through 5 scale is considered passing and some colleges will award a credit based on a passing score, giving students an early start to their college career.
So as we move into February this week, keep in mind that this semester will go by fast. Students, don't procrastinate, use your time effectively and stay on top of your school responsibilities. Seniors, don't be left out of any Senior activities because you are on the non-privilege list. If you have uncleared absences, go to Saturday school to clear them up! Remember that you've signed a Senior Contract, our behavior expectations are clear and we hope that you don't jeopardize your ability to participate in graduation. Finish off your career as a Spartan on a positive note!
Lastly, a huge shout out to our ASB for putting together a great Winter Sports Assembly. Just another reminder of why the Home of Champions is really the Happiest Place on Earth!
Looking forward to another great week at the Home of Champions!
Go Spartans!
