What is K-Pop?

  • K-pop stands for Korean popular music
  • It is like the pop we have in America, but in Korean
  • Includes many different genres like electro, house, hip-hop, Euro pop
  • Known for electrifying tones and dance friendly beats and sounds

Late 1800's

  • Originated during the late 1800's
  • Americans taught American and British folk songs to the Koreans
  • Started around the time when Korea was still under Japanese rule
  • Most early songs were translations of other popular Japanese and American songs
  • Songs were first known as "Changga songs"
  • Songs didn't sound like K-Pop today, but had very similar styles

Redefined Sound

  • As Korea itself continued to advance in technology, so did the music
  • American singers had many influences in the making of the K-Pop sound
  • Ex: During the Korean War, American singers would sing to soldiers in Korea
  • This gave ideas to Korean that later made their own unique sound
  • First known K-pop album was released around the year of 1925
  • In late 1900's a group known as Seo Taiji & Boys were the turning point for K-Pop music

Diffusion

K-Pop started around the area of Seoul, South Korea and has mainly spread to:

  • Middle East
  • Japan
  • Southeast Asia
  • East Asia
  • Parts of Europe
  • Parts of America
  • Parts of South America

  • Spread mainly because of hierarchical diffusion
  • People who are more known first listen
  • Fans and followers catch on
  • Many people in different cultures listen even though they might not understand

K-Pop can be exciting and thrilling, or calm and lyrical
