ESL Strategies Reloaded (Session # 164226)
When: June 4 (9:00am - 4:00pm)
Session # 164226
This session is for educators who want additional support who serve ELLs in the classroom. This course would benefit all teachers including ESL teachers who currently hold an ESL certificate and want a refresher on strategies to implement in their classroom. Educators who are not ESL certified but want to learn strategies to strengthen language development would enjoy this session. There will be many make and take activities to take back to the classroom.

Parents leave empowered in their capacity to lead, to reinforce reading and literacy at home, build confidence in their children, and become their child’s core advocate.
Guest Presenter: Lucy V. Cantu "Hispanic Cultural Awareness & Responsiveness"

This workshop is for education stakeholders. It is designed to help create a greater understanding and sensitivity for engaging Hispanic students and their families. Participants will learn about cultural differences, challenges, obstacles and barriers faced by this population. In addition, simple strategies to move beyond barriers will be discussed. Ms. Cantu has worked for over twenty years with families of migrant, diverse backgrounds and who live in poverty, and has woven things she has experienced into the discussion. Participants will leave inspired with a new, fresh perspective regarding "service" and its significance to enriching the work teachers do at schools and in the community.
Title III ESL Academy (4 days)
When: June 15-18 (9:00am - 4:00pm)

The ESL Academy is a training for teachers that are interested in becoming ESL certified. This class prepares teachers to be more effective with their second language learners using research, theories and strategies As part of the development of an understanding of second language acquisition and the challenges facing the English language learners, best practices for effective instruction will be shared. Explanations of sample exam questions will be analyzed as well as test-taking tips and techniques. This 4 day workshop provides a foundation on language acquisition while preparing participants for the TExES Exam #154 English as a Second Language Supplemental. Participants must attend all 4 days of face-to-face to receive any credit for the course. This is free to Title III Co-op Member districts. ($400 for Non Co-op Member districts)
Language Tools for Digital Learners: Elementary

Do you struggle getting your students to use academic language in a meaningful way? In this session (for elementary teachers), you will learn about resources to help students build language skills through differentiated activities. Participants will use an iPad to explore apps that build language across the domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The ultimate goal is to apply knowledge and skills from the session to create products that can be easily incorporated into any classroom to build language, allowing for lesson extension and student choice through technology.
Prep for TExES - 154 Supplemental

Recommendation: Participants have attended a previous ESC Academy, recent ESL college course, or training with prior knowledge of content focusing on second language support. This training will assist future ESL educators to become familiar with the 10 competencies tested on the 154 English as a Second Language Supplemental (ESL) test. Participants will gain insight on current practices in Second Language Acquisition, ESL methodology and a general understanding of program instruction to ensure success for English Language Learners. You will need to register for the computer assisted exam at http://www.texes.ets.org when planning to challenge the exam. Please refer to current TExES Registration Bulletin or the ETS TExES web site at wwww.texes.ets.org for information on test dates, test centers, fees, registration procedures and program policies.
