Heads Up from Richland Two
A message from the superintendent
Dear Richland Two Parents,
Good evening. I’m writing to ask for your help. Most likely, you have seen at least one report in the media this week about a weapon found at one of our schools. Unfortunately, administrators in four different schools in Richland Two confiscated weapons this week. I think you would agree that is absolutely unacceptable.
Parents, please take a moment to talk with your students about the importance of school safety. We are also asking that you help us by regularly checking pockets and backpacks for prohibited items. In many cases, the incidents at schools could have been prevented if prohibited items had been properly secured. Read more about these preventative measures that can help keep our schools safe for all students at besmartforkids.org.
Undoubtedly, the common suggestions of metal detectors and/or clear backpacks are being discussed by many of us. I believe, however, that the better solution is for all of us to work together to remind students that weapons do not belong at schools ever. Metal detectors and clear backpacks will not prevent students from facing real and serious consequences for bringing weapons to school. A student who breaks this rule faces possible expulsion and criminal charges, which could have an immediate impact on the student’s education as well as a long lasting impact on future success.
You have my commitment that as a school district we continue to do our part as well. We remain vigilant in implementing our safety measures and responding to situations such as weapons on school grounds. We continually examine our procedures to find ways to strengthen our ability to provide safe campuses.
While I am very disheartened by what occurred this week, I am extremely proud of the students who came forward and let school administrators know about the weapons on campus. Students have listened to our request to say something when they see something that is not right. Most importantly, they continue to act on this request.
Thank you for taking the time to share this information with your children. We will achieve the best results when we all work together to make sure that the safety and security of our schools remains a top priority for our district, community and state.
Sincerely,
Dr. Baron R. Davis
Superintendent
