The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of February 18 - February 22!
Message from the principal
UHS will not have school for students on Monday, February 18th, not only in honor of Presidents Day but also so that UHS staff members can come together for a day of learning called Cabin Fever Day.
This will be the 8th annual hosting of this event in the Urbandale Community School District. It is a day of learning that features a host of sessions in the morning that staff choose from that are taught primarily by other UCSD teachers and staff members. Sessions align with our pillars of learning for our district. In the afternoon, staff then have the opportunity to work collaboratively with other teachers not only from their school but also those from around the district and area.
We are grateful for this day of learning so that we can continually work to improve as individual teachers and learners as well as an entire team.

The Parent Satisfaction Survey allows parents to provide feedback on their experience with their child’s school. Please communicate with your parents in the most effective way and ask them to complete this short survey (about 10 minutes).
The survey can be accessed online at this link: Urbandale Parent Satisfaction Survey.

Blackout Poetry is Makerspace STEAM Challenge for February
Back again this year the Makerspace STEAM Challenge for February is blackout poetry with some of the books we weeded as a way to encourage recycling, art, and expression, while highlighting important contemporary issues our students currently face or experience within their circle of family and friends. To incorporate the 'challenge' we would like to our students to enhance their poetry creations with art in addition to the themes of hunger, race, and immigration. I have attached some examples below(art only, not theme).
Poem submissions are due Wednesday, February 27th to Miss Fullmer or Miss Watson for photographing (the students can keep their artwork). Teachers will vote for the winning submission by the end of Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday, February 28th. Submissions or creations by students which do not meet the requirements are still encouraged.
ASVAB testing offered on February 28th
UHS Counselors will offer the opportunity to take the ASVAB test on February 28 from 2:00-4:00 pm. The ASVAB offers high quality, cost-free career exploration and planning materials and services. It can give students an opportunity to identify skills and interests that may be required for careers they would like to pursue. It can also help identify strengths and weaknesses as they relate to career planning.
If you are interested in taking the ASVAB, please come to the Counseling Office and sign up. We have materials available if you would like to learn more about the test before taking it.
Senior graduation and senior pictures
UHS graduation for the Class of 2019 will be on Wednesday, May 29th, at 7:00pm at the Drake University Knapp Center.
UHS senior pictures to be included in the yearbook are due to Mrs. Oda-Lawler by March 14th. Link to more information about senior pictures in the yearbook.

ISASP information
The Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) will replace the Iowa Assessments beginning this spring. Below is a table showing the ISASP assessments students in UCSD will take:
ISASP Test Name - Grade Levels
Reading - 3rd - 11th
Language & Writing - 3rd - 11th
Mathematics - 3rd - 11th
Science - 5th, 8th, & 10th
Some notable changes that are also part of the new ISASP assessments include online testing, untimed testing sessions, and testing later in the school year.
All students, except those with specific accommodations that necessitate consumable testing materials as part of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 plan, will take assessments online this year. All other accommodations that are part of IEP or 504 plans will be available online. UCSD students in grades three through nine have all taken the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments online this year, so there will be a level of familiarity with online testing for those students. Many UHS students have experience taking class assessments through Moodle, an online learning management system.
ISASP assessments are untimed. Schedules for testing will be developed and communicated as the test window approaches, but students who do not finish their assessments in the alloted time will be allowed more time to finish. Again, this is very similar with what students in grades three through nine have already experienced with MAP tests.
Finally, the ISASP testing window will be in April, 2019. In past years, UCSD administered Iowa Assessments in February. The movement of the assessment window to April was due to a new state law requiring all schools in the state of Iowa to administer the ISASP assessments during the last quarter of the school year. The UCSD testing window was carefully set to avoid end-of-year conflicts with school activities and other assessments such as Advanced Placement testing.
More information regarding the ISASP assessments will be communicated as the April testing window approaches.
